Abandoned church fire under investigation
The County of Vermilion River Fire Service was dispatched early on Sunday morning to a report of a structure fire off of Township Road 544.
Dewberry Fire and Rescue responded, and upon arriving on-scene, located a fully engulfed building that had burnt completely to the ground.
Kirk Hughes is the Director of Protective Services for the County of Vermilion River.
“Crews cooled the embers and initial cause determination indicated an unusual fire. Chief Kevin MacDonald contacted the County Fire Chief who was dispatched to investigate,” Hughes said.
Chief Hughes attended the scene and after preliminary work, determined the cause suspicious and contacted the RCMP. Officers from Vermilion attended and the process of a detailed investigation began.
“The structure is believed to have been an old Gospel Church, and although abandoned, the cause of the fire is under investigation,” Hughes concluded.
