Kitscoty RCMP is warning residents to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a utility company after a suspicious individual reportedly attended a residence in Marwayne and claimed to be working for ATCO Electric.
According to RCMP, the man approached a homeowner and stated he was with ATCO Electric. He reportedly asked the resident to remove a lock from electrical equipment in their yard and said he would shut off power to the property.
When the homeowner requested identification, the man allegedly refused to provide any ID or a business card. Police say he also positioned himself so that the homeowner could not see the rear of his vehicle and continually moved to block the view.
The homeowner became suspicious and refused to comply with the man’s requests. The individual then left the property.
Afterward, the homeowner contacted ATCO and was reportedly informed that no ATCO employees had been assigned to attend the residence or work in the area.
Suspect Description
The individual is described as:
- Medium complexion
- Approximately six feet tall
- Approximately 190 to 200 pounds
- Curly black hair and a beard
- Wearing jeans, a button-up shirt and a blue vest with yellow reflective stripes
The suspect vehicle is described as a newer white Dodge pickup truck, possibly a 2020 to 2024 model, with two doors.
RCMP Reminder
Kitscoty RCMP is reminding residents to remain cautious when unexpected individuals attend their homes claiming to represent businesses or service providers.
Police recommend always asking for identification and, when in doubt, contacting the company directly using an official phone number to verify the person’s identity before allowing access to your property or complying with any requests.
Anyone who experiences a similar encounter or has information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the RCMP immediately.
Stay Vigilant
While no offences have been reported in connection with this incident, RCMP say situations like this serve as an important reminder for residents to trust their instincts and verify credentials before providing access to homes, yards or utility infrastructure.
