LAC LA BICHE – From ribbon skirts and Ukrainian cloth dolls to local photography, cultural foods, beading and henna art, the Lac La Biche Museum is packing a lot into this year’s Alberta Culture Days.

The museum will host a week of free activities from Sept. 19 to 26, inviting residents and visitors to create, learn and experience some of the cultures and traditions found throughout the Lac La Biche region.

The celebration gets underway Saturday, Sept. 19 with two hands-on workshops.

At 10 a.m., Irina Kalina will lead a Ukrainian Cloth Doll Workshop for participants six and older.

At noon, Danielle Patenaude of Métis Matriarch Ltd. will lead a Ribbon Skirt Making Workshop for participants 16 and older.

Both workshops are free, but space is limited and advance registration through the Lac La Biche Museum website is required. The ribbon skirt workshop is limited to one registration per participant.

Cultural Art Walk runs Sept. 22 to 26

The celebration continues during regular museum hours from Sept. 22 to 26 with a Cultural Art Walk featuring three exhibitions.

Local photographer Donna Feledichuk will be featured in See the Forest Differently, an exhibition of her award-winning wildlife photography. The collection focuses on the wildlife found within the forest and encourages visitors to look more closely at the animals, relationships and moments that can easily go unnoticed.

Indigenous Footwear: Reflections of Culture in Wearable Art, curated by Jennifer Mueller, explores Indigenous footwear from across Canada.

The exhibition includes moccasins, boots and kamiks and looks at how environment, available materials, regional traditions and cultural exchange have influenced footwear construction and decoration, including the use of hide, fur, quillwork, embroidery and beadwork.

The Art Walk will also showcase work created by local children, giving young artists an opportunity to share their own perspectives on culture, heritage and their community.

Food, art and culture take over the museum Sept. 26

The week’s main celebration happens Saturday, Sept. 26, beginning with opening ceremonies from 1 to 1:30 p.m.

Then comes a part of the afternoon visitors may want to arrive hungry for.

The Cultural Food Potluck: A Taste of Lac La Biche runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., bringing together dishes from cultures represented throughout the region.

The museum says Indigenous, Ukrainian, Cameroonian and Norwegian foods will be among the cuisines represented, along with several others.

From 2:30 to 4 p.m., visitors can get hands-on during Cultural Arts & Crafts, with activities including beading and henna art.

All Alberta Culture Days activities at the Lac La Biche Museum are free.
