A 32-year-old man from Elizabeth Métis Settlement is facing multiple new charges after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen pickup truck.
According to Cold Lake RCMP, officers received information at approximately 9 a.m. on May 25 regarding the whereabouts of a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breaching the conditions of his parole.
With assistance from Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services from St. Paul and Cold Lake, the Eastern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit and Cold Lake RCMP’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) team, police located the suspect operating a stolen pickup truck on the Elizabeth Métis Settlement.
RCMP say the driver attempted to flee and operated the vehicle in a dangerous manner. Police ultimately used a tactical vehicle intervention technique, commonly known as a PIT manoeuvre, to stop the vehicle and take the suspect into custody.
Simon Cardinal, 32, of Elizabeth Métis Settlement, has been charged with:
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Flight from police
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Failing to comply with a release order (two counts)
- Driving while prohibited
Cardinal was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice on June 10, 2026.
