Elk Point is moving forward with a new approach to waste collection while also preparing for its annual spring cleanup.
At its April 13 meeting, council approved entering into a contract with E360 Environmental Solutions for garbage collection services, marking a shift away from relying solely on municipal equipment.
Decision driven by aging equipment and rising costs
The decision follows extended discussions around the condition of existing equipment, increasing maintenance demands, and the long-term cost of replacing municipal assets.
Council also considered coordinating services with neighbouring municipalities, but the timelines and readiness of the communities did not align.
With those factors in mind, council moved ahead with the contract to ensure service continuity and cost stability.
The new service is expected to begin as early as June, with no significant changes anticipated for residents in garbage collection.
Spring cleanup planned for May
Alongside waste management decisions, the Town is preparing for its annual spring cleanup, expected in mid-May.
The event will once again involve students and community volunteers, with plans to include a community barbecue and a judged cleanup component.
The initiative aims to encourage community participation while helping to clean up public spaces following the winter season.
Council also approved promoting the event and supporting minor costs related to prizes and logistics.
