A fast-moving grass fire south of the McNabb Wildlife Sanctuary brought Vermilion Fire & Rescue Society into action Tuesday afternoon, despite snowy patches still on the ground and low water pooling in the area.

When crews arrived, they found about 10 acres already burning, with the fire moving quickly into dense bush and shrubs. Firefighters worked alongside local farmers to bring it under control, focusing first on stopping the head of the fire before working in on the flanks.

Vermilion Fire Chief Anton Krys said the fire ultimately grew to about 20 acres. As of 6:30 p.m., crews were in the final stages of overhaul.

The fire marks the first outside fire of the season for the County of Vermilion River.

Fire officials are also reminding residents to check any previous burn permit sites and make sure they are fully extinguished.
