LAC LA BICHE – A former senior Lac La Biche County employee is facing extortion and fraud charges stemming from alleged incidents in the fall of 2025.
Ali Memon, the County’s former General Manager of Infrastructure, faces extortion and fraud charges of over $5,000.
Memon’s lawyer appeared on his behalf in Lac La Biche Provincial Court on Aug. 31. The matter is scheduled to return to court Sept. 21 for election and plea. If a not guilty plea is entered, the case could then move toward setting a trial date.
According to information provided by Alberta Justice, the extortion charge relates to an alleged incident on Sept. 26, 2025, involving Blake Nashim and an attempt to obtain money.
The fraud charge relates to Oct. 1, 2025, when Memon allegedly defrauded Nashim of $10,000.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
Memon was placed on leave in December
Memon was serving as Lac La Biche County’s General Manager of Infrastructure at the time of the alleged incidents.
The County placed him on administrative leave in December 2025. At the time, Chief Administrative Officer Manny Deol confirmed Memon was on leave but did not publicly provide details about the circumstances.
Oad Sabhago was later introduced to Council as the County’s new General Manager of Infrastructure during the March 3 council meeting.
County forensic audit remains underway
Separate from the court proceedings, Lac La Biche County is currently undergoing a forensic audit.
Council approved up to $500,000 for the audit on Feb. 17 and appointed Reynolds Mirth Richards & Farmer LLP to procure and conduct the work.
The County has not publicly linked the forensic audit to the criminal charges against Memon, and no information currently establishes that the two matters are related.
The County has said it will make information from the audit public as appropriate once the process is complete.
Lac La Biche County has declined to comment on Memon’s ongoing court proceedings, but has indicated it cooperates with law enforcement investigations.
Memon is expected back in court Sept. 21.
