Seven hours on a bus isn’t exactly ideal preparation, but that’s the hand the U13 AA Female Panthers were dealt as they wrapped up their regular season in Grande Prairie against the RB Oilfield Hauling PCFAC Storm.

Three games. Plenty of rubber. A little nastiness. And now — a rematch with playoff hockey on the line.

Head Coach Shaun Hebert summed this group up best earlier in the weekend.

“These girls have some spunk and some heart. They’ve developed exponentially here in the last few months. I’m just very proud of the group that we have here right now.”

He’s not wrong.

Friday – Bus Legs and a Busy Night for Houle

Game one Friday night at Design Works South started tight. The Storm opened the scoring late in the first at 19:09 and then broke things open in the second with three goals.

The Panthers found life just 12 seconds into the third when Mia Moosewah-Littlechild buried her first of the weekend, assisted by Kaleigha Dion. But the Storm answered on the power play and skated away with a 5–1 win.

Shots told the story.

Grande Prairie fired 40 at Jayvrie Houle. The Panthers managed 25 in reply.

Houle stopped 35 of 40 in the loss, continuing what has been a heavy workload season between the pipes.

As Coach Hebert said about his netminder:

“Jayvrie’s played every game, stopped a lot of rubber here for us this year… She don’t miss much. They both work extremely hard and have gone a long way here this year.”

And the rubber kept coming all weekend.

OKAYYYYY PANTHERS FAM 🐾✨ MISS MILA MOOSEWAH-LITTLECHILD SAID “I’M HER.” Mila took advantage of EVERY opportunity and it PAID OFF in the biggest way… 🚨 FIRST AFHL GOAL 🚨 And not by accident either. She was hunting pucks, staying ready, and when her moment came? She buried it. Calm. Confident. Clutch. See less

Saturday – Panthers Push Back

Saturday was a different story.

The Panthers came out flying and grabbed the lead late in the first period when Kaleigha Dion notched her 14th of the season at 19:48, assisted by Aspyn “Machine Gun Kelly” Kelly.

The second period got heated in a hurry.

Penalties stacked up on both sides. The Storm struck four times in the frame, but the Panthers refused to wilt.

Moosewah-Littlechild scored her second of the weekend. Vienna “The Bug” Colbourne found the twine for her 19th of the season, assisted by Machine Gun Kelly and Markelle Whitford-Bull.

Final score 5–3.

Shots favoured the Storm 43–34, with Houle turning aside 38 more. The Panthers had five power play opportunities but couldn’t convert.

Morgan “The Sinner” Oomen — who Coach Hebert recently praised not just for her play but for her character — continues to be one of the heartbeat players in that room.

“Morgan’s a great kid… She just won the humanitarian award for Alberta Hockey for the month of February for her outstanding contributions… She works extremely hard.”

That work ethic shows every shift.

OKAY BUT CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS LITTLE MENACE (respectfully) 🐆🔥
MISS BRENNA BRUNET.
Tiny? Yes.
Tough? Absolutely.
Tenacious? On another level.
Brenna was out there playing like she’s 6’4” with a 7-foot wingspan.
Give none. Take all.
Every puck battle? Hers.
Every corner grind? She’s in it.
Every loose puck? Thank you, I’ll take that.
She does not back up.
She does not blink.
She does not ask for space. She TAKES it.
That’s Panther hockey.
That’s compete.
That’s heart over height every single time.
So proud of you, #4.
Small package. Elite pressure. Absolute problem for the other team. 🐾

Sunday – Physical Finale

By Sunday morning, the two teams were well acquainted.

And it showed.

The Storm opened the scoring early and the game quickly turned physical. Penalties were handed out in all three periods. There was chirping, hard forechecking and plenty of trips to the sin bin.

Houle faced her biggest test of the weekend — 49 shots.

She stopped 46 of them.

The defensive core of Mia Chappell, Baylee Brunet, Avery “On Doody” Doody, Maggie Mahe and Tessianna Shirt battled in front, blocking shots and clearing traffic.

Late in the third, Vienna “The Bug” Colbourne split the defence on a one-on-two rush and buried a backhander for her team-leading 20th goal of the season. Final score 3–1.

The Panthers finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play while killing off seven Storm advantages.

And despite the losses, Coach Hebert hasn’t wavered on what he sees in this group.

“U13 AA is kind of a tough league, especially when you’re playing against the top girls in Alberta. But these girls got spunk… Their work ethic is next to none. If they just keep working, good things will happen — not only in the rink, but in life.”

OKAYYYY BUT KALEIGHA SAID POSITION FLEX WHO??? 🐆✨
Miss girl slid back on D and said, “I got it.”
Rounded. Reliable. Ready.
Forward? Yup.
Defense? Yup.
Problem for the ops? Absolutely.
🙌So proud of you, Mama. Versatile and vicious in the best way. 🐾🔥

Ironic as it may seem, after all league games wrapped up Sunday, the Panthers found themselves in seventh spot, facing the fourth-place Storm in a best two out of three play-in series — back in Grande Prairie.

So once more, laundry will be done, bags will be packed and the bus will be loaded. The Panthers head back north for Game 1 Friday at 6:15 pm.

Round two. Same opponent. This time it counts even more.
