Playoff Battles and Season Endings — Avalanche Hockey Update
Round three of the playoffs for the U13 Avalanche started last Thursday night in Wainwright. The Avalanche, with the higher league record, chose to have the first game on the road and the last two at home. The Avalanche losing the first game 5–2. General Lee Barstad getting the last-minute call for the goaltending duties in this one, facing 20 shots. Jase “The Jackal” Malo and Maximus “To the Max” Laliberte scoring the only goals for the Avalanche, who fired 35 shots on the Bisons goaltender.
On Saturday at home, Benny Boy Saddleback in net for the Avalanche was outstanding. The Avalanche winning 5–4 in the barnburner. The Jackal scoring a hat trick and adding an assist. Jaydn “The Shark” Sakowsky and Gabe “Dangerous” Dion scoring the other two goals. General Lee and Thomas “The Tank” Morris adding an assist each.
On Sunday it came down to a one-game winner-take-all. The Avalanche peppered the Bisons goalie but he stood tall, the Bisons winning this one 4–3 to take the series and end the Avalanche season. The Jackal, The Shark and General Lee all scoring for the Avalanche. Stetson “Shack” Reynolds and Jay “Jumbo” Large assisting. Heartbreaking for the Avalanche players and parents, but on a positive note they all came a long way from the start of the season, getting into the third round of playoffs.
The U18 Avalanche played their first round of playoffs against Irma this past weekend, the Avalanche winning the best of three in two very intense games. The first game Friday night at the A.G. Ross Arena was packed to the roof with people and lots of noise, making it hard to hear the whistle. This game turned into a real barnburner. Lots and lots of penalties, most of them going to the Aces, the final score 7–6 for the Avalanche. Braylee “Free Willy” Lesyk was flying scoring four goals and adding an assist. Two of the Free Willy goals were unassisted when Willy pick-pocketed the Ace defensive players and sniped the goals. Faster than the speed of light, Liam “Sledgehammer” Swedgen adding one goal and he also had an assist. Wild Wyatt Fontaine sniped the other goal from the slot.
Lots of helpers in this winning effort. Brendan “Buzzsaw” Kadutski and Bobby “Blowtorch” Brind each with two assists. Apples for Morris Amyotte, Remington “Steel” Reynolds, Cade Sayers, Tristan “Bobcat” Brousseau and Odin St. Arnault as well. Ollie the Goalie Owen Grykuliak closing the door in the end to give the Avalanche the win.
On Saturday in Irma the Avalanche won 4–0 to close out the series. This game was also filled with penalties. Free Willy and Wild Wyatt each scoring a goal and adding two assists each. Morris Amyotte and Odin St. Arnault each scoring a goal. Liam “Sledgehammer” Swedgen also with a helper. Ollie the Goalie getting the shutout.
This coming weekend the U18 Avalanche will host the Bonnyville Pontiacs Friday night at 7:15 in the next round of playoffs. The second game will be in Bonnyville on Saturday. Game three, if necessary, will be back at the A.G. Ross Arena Sunday afternoon at 4 pm.
The U11 Avalanche after a three-week break took to the ice in Bonnyville on Saturday morning winning 9–2. A little time off doesn’t hurt once in a while it seems. Cohen “Big Horn” Brousseau with four goals and two assists. Younger brother Gavin “The Badger” Brousseau with two goals and two assists. Forward Mason “Mini-Wheels” Weir and the two defencemen Damian “Fog Horn” Ockerman and Landon “Lights Out” St. Arnault each with a goal. Brady “The Bulldozer” Heathcote with two assists. Mya “The Magnificent” Lorenson and Blake “The Rattlesnake” Fontaine each adding an assist.
The U11 team is now finished the regular season and will be playing in the U11 North Division playoff tournament held in Marwayne this coming weekend.
