The Bonnyville Pontiacs grabbed three of a possible six points on a demanding three-games-in-three-days road trip — highlighted by a seven-goal explosion in Canmore — and now turn their focus back home.

The Pontiacs host the Fort McMurray Oil Barons tonight at 7 pm at the RJ. It’s a big one against the MOB as the playoff race tightens.

Friday: Shootout Point in Olds

Bonnyville opened the weekend with a hard-fought 2-1 shootout loss to the Olds Grizzlys.

Carter Reed tied the game late in the first period, and the Pontiacs controlled long stretches, outshooting Olds 48-25. Ben Laurette was steady in goal, stopping 23 of 24 shots through regulation and overtime.

Head Coach Chad Mercier had emphasized internal focus heading into the trip.

“The longer it’s going without us finding ways to win, I thought we’ve played some pretty good hockey at times. We just need to be a little bit better, a little more relentless,” Mercier said.

Lucas Knorr said the message was about tightening details.

“If we could tighten those up and play a full sixty, we’ll be golden.”

They earned a point — but wanted two.

Saturday: Seven-Goal Statement in Canmore

The offence broke loose in a 7-1 win over the Canmore Eagles.

Costantino scored twice. Pederson and Kinniburgh added goals. The power play went 3-for-4. And Gavin Harrison recorded a hat trick, pushing his season total to 22 goals.

Max Pendy called the win a turning point.

“It was a big, big confidence booster for all of us heading into these last ten games,” Pendy said.

Nathan Salisbury was outstanding in goal, turning aside 48 of 49 shots as Canmore pushed hard.

Mercier had challenged the group to be more determined offensively.

“At the end of the day we’ve got to be more determined to score,” he said.

Saturday showed what happens when they are.

Sunday: Special Teams Battle in Calgary

The weekend wrapped up with a 4-2 loss to the Calgary Canucks.

Calgary struck twice on the power play in the first period, and despite outshooting the Canucks 39-32, Bonnyville couldn’t climb all the way back.

Lussier and MacLean scored for the Pontiacs, but the early deficit and special teams difference proved costly.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we’ve got one thing in mind and it’s play the way we need to to come out of here with two points,” Mercier said.

Back to the RJ Tonight

The Pontiacs return home tonight looking to build off the positives from the weekend — especially the offensive breakthrough in Canmore.

“Ultimately there’s probably a lot of people have us counted out, but our belief system still in the room is there,” Mercier said.

Puck drop is 7 pm at the RJ against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

Three games in three days are behind them.

Now it’s about protecting home ice and keeping the push alive.
