Tales from the Timebox: April 4th, 2017

Honey I’m home! The hockey season is finally over for the A.G. Ross Arena. Sadly for some, not so much for others. October to April is a long season . Today we pull the plug and in a few weeks there will be nothing but water. Its usually cold enough in there to keep ice for a week or so as you all know unless you open up the doors. What a great year we had. Our minor hockey teams are growing and playing really well do to the fact we have some terrific coaches. . Two teams, the Atoms and the Midgets  both made it to provincials,. The Midgets hosted of course but they also won the zone so they would have been there even if they didn’t host. The Atom team won their league and the zone. Both of the teams made it  to play in the  semi final games. in the provincial finals and lost really close games, in fact the Atom team went to overtime in the semi final game.  The Storm bantam girls team really came on strong at the end of the year and gave the female bantam B  provincial champions Irma a run for their money in the playoffs. Lots of young players in Novice and Atoms so the future is looking great. Tonight is the minor hockey wind up at the Allied Arts..
“My boy’s gonna to play in the big league, my boy’s going to turn some heads, my boy’s gonna play in the big league, ooohhh… the Beer League!!!” Nothing is better than playing with your own son. We played together lots years ago on the B & R Bullets rec team when Jordan  was younger and living at home, but this was the first time in about 10 years that we played on the same team. And if you ever get the chance to skate with your grandson than do it, because that’s really special. Of course he was too young to play a game in the Jim Vinge Memorial Tournament, you must be 18 to play , but he did do the warm up with us and that was really cool. The 7th annual Jim Vinge Memorial Tournament was held this past weekend and it was fun as always. It’s a great way to end the season, see some old friends, and share a lot of  laughs. My  good buddy Jim Vinge loved the game of hockey, he loved his family and we worked the time box together for most of his own kids games. He would make lots of  C.D’s  . with hockey music for us to play. The air horn was his idea. We hooked it up just before the 2006 peewee provincials.   Anyone can play in this year end last hurray  tournament , male or female and  as long as you  can still lace them up there’s no age limit …63 and still counting on playing again next year,. And I ‘ the Sportshound ‘ scored 2 goals. One of the ‘ Bruise Brothers ‘ Andrew Jenner who played minor hockey here was on our team and said that I must put my own name in the sports write up  just like I did for him and his brother Matthew when they played. These young kids have all grown up into fine young men and women and one day may get to play with their own kids.
And speaking of the women, five of them did play in the Vinge Tournament, but before that for a warm up they all played in the Storm Alumni game that was held Friday night just before the Vinge Tournament started.
It was great to have some of the original Storm players back on the ice. Lots of them are mothers now; including my daughter Jena ‘the Princess’ Colbourne who played with our grand daughter the Storm goalie Heaven ‘the Brick House’ Colbourne. The older Storm team winning. This one by a couple of questionable goals… needing some video review!! Halle ‘ Comet ‘ Stybel scoring for the bantams , assist by Avery ‘ Whirlwind’ Warawa, then ‘ Whirlwind ‘  scoring one all by herself for the young Storm.
And a big happy birthday going out today to the Elks Senior hockey team head coach Murry Cochrane. The Elks have been improving year after year since they stated up three years ago, this year they made it to the second round of the playoffs. One round better than last year. They also held an alumni game this past January that was a blast from the past. Lots of good stuff coming up the Oilers making the playoffs and the Blue Jays regular season starting.  I would mention that my Leafs are very close to making the playoffs but don’t want to jinx them!! You know what they say in Hog Twon…. ‘Spring is here, the Leafs are out!’ Maybe, maybe , maybe……..we will have a late spring this year!!
And now for the K.A. Campbell quote of the week.’ Its not so important who starts the game, but who finishes it.’ – John Wooden
