A familiar face in volleyball gyms across the Lakeland has received one of the province’s top officiating honours.
Troy Gratton has been named Volleyball Alberta’s 2026 Development Referee of the Year, receiving the Mikasa Achievement Award in recognition of his commitment to developing the game, mentoring new officials and continuously improving as a referee.
Gratton, a Level 2 referee, was recognized during the Volleyball Alberta Mikasa Achievement Awards.
With more than 30 years of experience as a player, coach and referee, Gratton has built a reputation for bringing a calm, confident presence to every match. Volleyball Alberta says mentors and evaluators consistently praise his professionalism, sound decision-making and ability to manage high-pressure situations.
His impact extends well beyond the court.
According to Volleyball Alberta, Gratton has become a valued mentor for newer officials, particularly those in Alberta’s rural volleyball communities. Whether taking on challenging assignments or helping less experienced referees build confidence, he is known for his positive attitude and willingness to share his knowledge.
The organization says his dedication to leadership, continuous learning and referee development has made a lasting impact on officiating in Alberta.
