Renegades & Bandits Celebrate Season
Football Banquet celebrates players’ successes
The Bonnyville Amateur Football Association (BAFA) Peewee Renegades and Bantam Bandits celebrated their 2016 seasons with a football banquet on Saturday in Glendon. The banquet focused on the players’ successes on and off the field.
“This season is very hard for me to articulate,” says Head Coach of the Renegades, Kevin Sartain, “so that people can truly understand what happened this season with the Bonnyville Renegades. I know you all sat there and you got to see these big wins and these amazing things that these kids were doing [on the field].”
The Renegades broke the record for most passing yards in a peewee football season, in the history of the province, “it’s never been done!” proclaims Coach Sartains. The Renegades went 4,000 yards rushing and 2,000 yards receiving. “I cannot express to you enough, this is the greatest peewee football team this province has ever put together.” The Renegades went undefeated in the regular season, to win the League Championship and then win Provincial Tier III Peewee Football Championship.

Head Coach of the Bandits, Mickey Fagnan says it was the players’ character that was the shining star during the season. Fagnan recalls the final playoff game of the season. Played out between the Bandits and St. Paul Bengals, in St. Paul, “I remember standing on top of a ping-pong table, at the St. Paul school, talking to our players about what we really want from our players, as a group of players. What the Bandit team, at its root, is here for. We talked about class, we talked about character and never leaving anything on the table.”
Fagnan says he was most proud of his team after that game. There was some drama on the field, and Fagnan noted that the players never got involved. Although the lost the game, Fagnan says the team won, “we won on that day. Our association changed on that day; because, you young men and women, and you coaches stood for what was right.”
