Eight People Charged following Shooting Incident
Cold Lake RCMP charge several persons after shooting incident
Between the dates of September 14, 2016 and September 21, 2016, several arrests and search warrants were executed that resulted in eight people being charged with a variety of offences.
On September 14, 2016, Elk Point RCMP responded to a report of two suspicious vehicles in the area of Fishing Lake. The complainant followed the vehicles and it is alleged that shots were fired at the complainant’s vehicle from one of the vehicles he was following. One of the suspects was grazed during the alleged shooting causing a minor head injury.
Cold Lake RCMP located an abandoned vehicle matching one of the vehicle descriptions provided. Members from both detachments, along with RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) and Emergency Response Team (ERT) from Edmonton, assisted in searching the area of the initial complaint. The second suspect vehicle was located abandoned. A short time later two suspects were found in a wooded area near the second vehicle and were apprehended by police.
On September 18, 2016, search warrants were executed at a residence in Cold Lake and a third suspect was arrested in relation to the shooting incident initially reported. Several firearms, stolen property, including a vehicle, and drugs were seized during the search.
While investigating the initial incident, five additional people were arrested on unrelated matters. Two additional firearms were seized, along with a stolen vehicle from a residence in Cold Lake.
Kannan Desjarlais, a 19-year-old resident of Cold Lake, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
- Careless use of Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm without a License
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
- Aggravated Assault
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5,000
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Resisting Arrest
He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court via CCTV on September 28, 2016.
Kelvin Junior CARDINAL, a 24-year-old resident of Cold Lake, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5,000
- Careless Storage of a Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm while Prohibited
- Fail to Comply with an Undertaking
- Possession of a Controlled Substance
He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court via CCTV on September 28, 2016 via CCTV.
A 17-year-old youth also has been charged with property related offences. The youths name cannot be released under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Johnathan PRUDEN, a 39-year-old resident of Cold Lake, has been charged with the following offences:
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5,000
- Driving while Disqualified
- Operate a Motor Vehicle without Insurance
- Operate a Motor Vehicle without Registration
He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake via CCTV on September 28, 2016.
Amy CARDINAL, a 22-year-old resident of Cold Lake, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
- Obstruction
- Fail to Comply with a Probation Order (X4)
She has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake via CCTV on September 28, 2016.
Simon CARDINAL, a 23-year-old resident of Cold Lake, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
- Obstruction
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5,000
He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court via CCTV on September 28, 2016. Simon CARDINAL was also wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant under the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, for failure to comply with his statutory release conditions.
Zachuary DESJARLAIS, a 22-year-old resident of Cold Lake, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
- Transport a Firearm in a Careless Manner (X2)
- Possession of a Firearm without a License (X2)
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle (X2)
- Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000
He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court via CCTV on September 28, 2016.
Jonathan MEAKIN, a 27-year-old resident of Cold Lake, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
- Transport a Firearm in a Careless Manner (X2)
- Possession of a Firearm without a License (X2)
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle (X2)
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5,000
He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court via CCTV on September 28, 2016.
