High school students in the Lakeland region will soon have a new opportunity to explore careers in the skilled trades thanks to a new partnership between Aspen View Public Schools and Portage College.

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, students will be able to enrol in Trades 131: Introduction to the Trades, a dual credit course that allows them to earn both high school and post-secondary credits while gaining hands-on experience in several in-demand trades.

Hands-on learning across multiple trades

The 60-hour course is designed for students who are already interested in the trades as well as those still exploring career options.

Current plans include introductory training in:

  • Mechanics
  • Electrician
  • Welding
  • Steamfitter/Pipefitter

Students will complete online theory before taking part in practical training led by Portage College instructors. Lab sessions will be held either at Portage College’s Lac La Biche campus or through the college’s mobile training lab, which will travel to participating Aspen View schools.

Helping students discover their future

Aspen View Public Schools Superintendent Constantine Kastrinos said the program is about helping students make informed decisions about life after graduation.

“Helping students discover their strengths and interests is an important part of preparing them for life after high school. Whether this course confirms an existing interest or introduces students to a new possibility, the experience will help them make more informed decisions about their future.”

John Hunter, Coordinator of Trades and Technology with Portage College, said students shouldn’t feel pressured to have their careers mapped out while they’re still in high school.

“Sometimes all it takes is the opportunity to try something new to discover a passion or talent that shapes their future. That’s what we hope this program provides.”

Addressing regional workforce needs

Aspen View Board Chair Candy Nikipelo said the partnership supports both students and the region’s growing demand for skilled workers.

“The skilled trades play a vital role in the communities we serve, and we know there is strong demand for skilled workers across our region,” she said, adding that the division is grateful to Portage College and Alberta Education and Childcare for helping make the program possible.

The new dual credit opportunity is supported through a $50,000 grant from Alberta Education and Childcare, aimed at expanding career education opportunities for students.

More details coming

Additional information, including participating schools, student eligibility, the application process and any applicable fees, will be released closer to the start of the 2026-27 school year.
