Hockey players, figure skaters and other arena users in St. Paul will have a clearer idea of when ice will be available each season after Town council approved a new policy establishing standard opening and closing dates for both local arenas.
The new Arena Seasonal Opening and Closing Policy, approved at council’s June 22 meeting, is designed to create more consistency for user groups while giving staff limited flexibility to adjust dates if weather, maintenance or operational needs require.
Director of Parks and Recreation Harvey Smyl said the policy provides predictable timelines for everyone who uses the facilities while helping staff plan annual ice installation and removal.
Clancy Arena opens later, stays open longer
Under the policy, Clancy Arena will open on the third weekend of September, with ice available beginning the Friday of that weekend.
The arena will remain open until April 15 or the third weekend of April, depending on operational requirements, allowing ice to remain in place through the selected closing date.
CAP Arena follows earlier schedule
The CAP Arena will continue operating on a slightly different schedule.
Ice installation will begin following the September long weekend, with the arena opening on the Monday after Labour Day.
The arena will close on March 15 or the third weekend of March, depending on operational needs.
Flexibility remains for weather and maintenance
While the policy establishes standard operating dates, it also recognizes that conditions can change from year to year.
Minor adjustments can be approved by the Chief Administrative Officer or designate to account for weather, ice-making conditions, maintenance projects or programming requirements. Council will be notified of any approved changes at its next regular meeting.
The policy also requires the Town to communicate opening and closing dates to user groups and the public at least 30 days in advance through the Town’s website and social media channels.
The seasonal dates will be reviewed by council every three years, or sooner if operational needs warrant changes.
For local hockey associations, skating clubs and recreational users, the policy provides a clearer framework for planning each season while giving the Town enough flexibility to respond to changing conditions
