he M.D. of Bonnyville’s first-ever TriQuest was held at the Muriel Lake M.D. Park May 30.
Over 40 racers from 19 to 64 years old showed up ready to race. Race day was forecasted to be a soggy one, but competitors and organizers were surprised with a perfect day — light wind, slight cloud cover, and a pleasant temperature. It was also the kick off to Parks & Recreation Month (June).
Conceptualized and hosted by the M.D.’s Parks & Recreation Department, TriQuest is a little different than a usual triathlon. While also shorter, the biggest distinction is the replacement of the swim section with a paddling section. Instead of racers jumping into Muriel Lake for a swim, they brought their personal watercraft (people powered only) to the shores of Muriel Lake for a scenic three-kilometre paddle. The race also included a nine-kilometre bike ride and 4.5-kilometre run.
“We were so excited to see these participants show up and get into the spirit of the race,” said Manager of Parks & Recreation Greg Sheppard. “With a late winter and soggy spring, we weren’t sure how many racers would sign up, and we had a few sign up even just days before. We’re looking forward to next year and can’t wait to welcome more racers to the park.”
Registered racers also received a discount on their weekend stay if they stayed in the M.D.-owned campground.
“It’s our biggest park, and, in my opinion, one of our most beautiful parks,” Sheppard said. “From the Lookout to the 13 kilometres of grass trails through the forest, it’s the perfect place to hold an event like this.”
Thanks go out to the volunteers, including those from Bonnyville Search and Rescue, Kinosoo Ridge, and M.D. Peace Officers.

The individual winner was Paul St. Amant.
The winning team was made up of Amber Ozaruk, Amy Olszowka, Lee-ann Lafond, and Jacob Lafond.
