Bonnyville council has appointed Councillor Yvonne Szydlik and Councillor Kayla Blanchette to the Bonnyville Municipal Library Board while also reviewing the board’s 2025 financial statements during a recent meeting.
The appointments were approved through separate motions, with both councillors set to serve six-month terms ending Oct. 31, 2026, or until the next organizational meeting of council.
Following the appointments, council received a presentation from administration outlining the library’s financial position for the year ending Dec. 31, 2025.
According to the report, the library closed the year with a deficit of $1,094. However, administration noted the total included $4,949 in amortization expenses, resulting in an operational surplus of $3,855 when amortization is excluded.
The financial presentation prompted discussion around the library’s operations and overall management practices.
Councillor Kayla Blanchette commended the organization’s financial management during the meeting.
“Excellent financial stewardship,” Blanchette said.
Council members also acknowledged the continued importance of the Bonnyville Municipal Library as a community resource, noting its role in providing educational programming, public access services and resources for residents of all ages.
The discussion also highlighted several upcoming programs and events happening at the library throughout the remainder of May.
A Plant Swap and DIY Plant Marker event is scheduled for May 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., encouraging residents to exchange plants while learning about gardening and the library’s seed library.
On May 20, the library is partnering with LICA Environmental Stewards for a free “Mammals of the Lakeland” workshop focused on wildlife signs, tracking and regional mammal behaviour.
The library will also host a Coffee Crafternoon on May 25 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., featuring a collage bookmark activity for adults and seniors.
Additional upcoming events include a B.Y.O. Book Club meeting on May 27 for adults and mature youth, along with a Bananagrams tournament on May 30 for teens and adults.
Ongoing programming also includes weekly Pokémon League sessions running Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. through early June.
