Northern Lights Public Schools and ATA Local #15 hosted their annual A Touch of Class celebration Friday evening in Glendon, bringing staff together to recognize long-serving educators and welcome the next wave into local classrooms.

13 Retirees Recognized for Decades of Service

The highlight of the evening was the recognition of 13 retiring staff members who have collectively shaped education across the Lakeland region for decades.

Those honoured included:

  • Tammy Becotte – Cold Lake Junior High
  • Peggy Chick – H.E. Bourgoin Middle School
  • Frank Collins – Cold Lake Outreach School
  • Chan Cusson – Cold Lake Junior High
  • Rick Cusson – NLPS Superintendent
  • Julie Dubeau – Glendon School
  • Lisa Funk – Vera M. Welsh Elementary School
  • Susanne Hildt – North Star Elementary School
  • Terry Luciow – Glendon School
  • Jackie Tkachuk – Division Office
  • Jill Toutant – Lac La Biche Outreach School
  • Laura Tuttosi – Cold Lake Junior High
  • Chris Vining – Cold Lake Elementary School

Each retiree leaves behind a lasting impact on students, staff and the communities they served.

New Teachers Step Into the Profession

The evening wasn’t just about looking back — it was also about looking forward.

Five new teachers were formally inducted into the Alberta Teachers’ Association, marking the beginning of their careers within Northern Lights Public Schools.

The event highlighted the importance of mentorship, growth and continuing the strong foundation built by those who came before them.

Provincial Awards Recognize Local Excellence

Two staff members were also recognized at the provincial level during the event.

  • Hannah Ludlage of Cold Lake Junior High received the 2025 Inspiring Educator Award
  • Matthew Stavert, Manager of Software & Integration, received the ATLE Passion Award

Their recognition speaks to the strength and leadership within the division beyond the classroom.

A Community Effort

ATA President Jason Schilling attended the event, reinforcing the connection between the division and the broader education community.

The evening served as a reminder of the people behind local schools — the educators, leaders and support staff who continue to shape the future of the Lakeland region.
