Lac La Biche County is taking a step toward expanding tourism and business opportunities after receiving provincial funding through Alberta’s Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) program.
The County will use the funding to complete a feasibility study exploring the development of a year-round hotel and conference centre — a project aimed at attracting visitors, supporting local events and encouraging business travel to the region.
Exploring long-term growth opportunities
The study will help determine the best investment approach, giving the County a clearer path forward for a project that could play a key role in economic diversification.
Mayor Paul Reutov said the funding allows the County to explore new ideas while managing risk.
“Lac La Biche County is pleased to work with Alberta’s government to revitalize and expand our local economy,” said Reutov. “Receiving the NRED grant gives us the freedom to safely explore the feasibility of new, innovative ideas that will grow our community.”
Part of a province-wide investment
The funding is part of a broader provincial effort to support economic growth across Alberta, particularly in rural and northern communities.
Through the NRED program, Alberta’s government provided nearly $6.5 million to 66 projects last year. Budget 2026 includes an additional $9 million over the next three years to continue supporting similar initiatives.
Since its launch, the program has invested $28.7 million in 291 projects across the province, helping communities attract investment, support local businesses, and strengthen regional economies.
Supporting tourism and business travel
If successful, the proposed hotel and conference centre could help position Lac La Biche County as a stronger destination for both tourism and business events — a key opportunity identified by local leaders.
Projects like this are often seen as foundational, creating infrastructure that supports everything from conferences and tournaments to regional partnerships and economic activity.
What comes next
The feasibility study will outline potential models, costs and opportunities for the project, helping council determine whether to move forward and how to approach development.
The NRED program offers grants ranging from $10,000 to $300,000 and is designed to support planning, investment attraction and long-term economic growth in communities across Alberta.
