Community groups brought forward multiple funding requests to the M.D. of Bonnyville, with council approving support for one initiative while holding off on others for further review.

Adaptive snow sports funding approved

Council approved $5,750 in funding for Canadian Adaptive Snow Sports (CADS) Cold Lake to support specialized ski equipment for individuals with disabilities.

The program relies on high-cost adaptive equipment and volunteers to provide access to skiing and snowboarding.

“One of those sitskis costs in the neighbourhood of $11,000 to $12,000,” the presenter told council.

Support from council was immediate and personal.

“The smile on that child… was incredible,” one councillor shared, describing the impact of the program firsthand.

Another added, “Without someone like yourself, they could never do that.”

The funding will come from the municipality’s 2026 Community Action Grant and Donations budget, with future discussion around covering ongoing annual equipment costs.

Broncs & Bulls expansion proposal heads back for review

Organizers behind the Lakeland Extreme Broncs and Bulls event also presented to council, highlighting the event’s success in Cold Lake and plans to expand.

The group is proposing a new one-day event in Bonnyville on August 29, 2026, and requested $15,000 in sponsorship from the M.D.

The presentation focused on the event’s growing popularity and regional draw, positioning it as an opportunity to bring additional visitors and economic activity into the area.

However, council did not approve funding during this meeting.

Instead, members voted to accept the presentation as information and directed administration to bring the request back to a future meeting for further consideration.

Shooting range expansion also deferred

The Bonnyville Shooting Sports Association requested $30,000 to expand its facility with a new sporting clay shooting trail.

The proposed project would include:

  • Up to 20 shooting stations
  • Trail development through the site
  • Increased capacity for events and tourism

The group pointed to strong economic potential, noting similar events in other communities have generated significant regional spending.

Despite that, council chose not to make an immediate decision.

The request was also referred back to administration for further review and a future report.

Balancing support with process

While council showed strong support for community initiatives, the meeting highlighted a consistent approach — immediate funding for smaller, well-defined requests, and additional review for larger proposals.

All three presentations will now factor into upcoming funding discussions as council continues to weigh community impact, budget priorities, and long-term planning.
