Cold Lake is preparing to welcome a major NHL presence later this month as the city launches Oil Country in Cold Lake Week, a celebration of community, energy and local pride.

The week, running March 23–29, will feature events, school visits and community activities connected to the Edmonton Oilers, bringing a high-profile spotlight to the region.

Mayor Bob Mattice said the visit is about more than hockey — it’s an opportunity to showcase everything Cold Lake has to offer.

“And then at, w- they, they wanna see our community, so we wanna show off our community,” Mattice said.

Oilers events and community involvement

The week will include a range of activities designed to engage residents of all ages, including opportunities to connect with Oilers representatives and take part in community events.

Mattice said accessibility and community participation are key.

“Centre, we’ll have a free community skate,” he said.

Residents are also encouraged to lean into the experience and show their support.

“We’d encourage you to wear your Oilers, tarps,” Mattice added.

More than hockey

While the Oilers connection brings excitement, the week is also rooted in Cold Lake’s identity as part of Alberta’s energy sector.

The proclamation recognizes the role oil and gas continues to play in the region, while also using the event to bring the community together.

Mattice said hosting the Oilers creates a unique opportunity to put Cold Lake on display.

“So the idea is they come out to the community,” he said.

Showcasing Cold Lake

City officials see the week as a chance to highlight Cold Lake not just as a place to live and work, but as a community worth visiting and investing in.

With a mix of sports, community events and local engagement, Oil Country Week is expected to draw strong participation from across the region.
