St. Paul council has officially cancelled its April 27, 2026 regular council meeting, with most members expected to be away at the CPAA conference.

Administration said quorum will not be possible that night, and cancelling the meeting now will allow the Town enough time to notify the public.

Council approved the cancellation during its March 9 meeting.

The decision, however, also raised questions about timing, as late April is typically a key period for budget work.

Councillor Nathan Rosychuk asked whether another meeting may need to be added, noting the Town still has major budget and financial items to deal with during that period.

Administration said that is now looking likely.

“It is looking that way,” Jeffery said, adding that a special meeting will probably need to be scheduled once the Town can confirm timing with its auditors.

That special meeting could be used for matters such as hearing the audited financial statements and moving forward with the operating budget, capital budget and tax rate bylaw.

Mayor Glenn Andersen said council effectively has no choice but to cancel the regular meeting if five members will be away and quorum cannot be reached.

Council approved the cancellation unanimously.

Busy budget season ahead

Earlier in the meeting, administration had already signalled that mid-to-late April and early May will be a busy period as the Town works toward final budget approval and first reading of its tax rate bylaw.

Jeffery also noted many provincial financial reporting deadlines land at the end of the first quarter, creating added pressure for administration this time of year.
