A single-vehicle rollover on Highway 897 near the Village of Marwayne Friday evening left one person injured and temporarily closed the highway as multiple emergency crews responded to the scene.
Vehicle Rolls Into Ditch
According to emergency responders, the collision happened around 5:30 p.m. when a vehicle travelling south on Highway 897 lost control, rolled and came to rest in the east ditch.
Firefighters with Marwayne Fire & Rescue were first dispatched along with Medavie Health Services West – Northeast Alberta paramedics and RCMP officers from the Kitscoty Detachment.
Additional calls to dispatch indicated that a single passenger was injured and trapped inside the wreckage, prompting additional resources to be sent. Kitscoty Fire Department and County #9-1 Fire Chief Hughes were then called in to assist.
Crews Work Together to Free Patient
When the first responders arrived, crews quickly made contact with the trapped victim and began providing medical assistance. Due to the severity of the crash and potential for spinal injury, firefighters immediately established spinal control while preparing the vehicle for extrication.
At the same time, other responders secured the area, set up traffic control and detours, and a 511 Alberta traffic alert was issued for motorists travelling through the area.
Firefighters from Marwayne and Kitscoty worked together to safely extricate the patient from the vehicle, allowing paramedics to begin advanced medical treatment.
