A stabbing in St. Paul Tuesday afternoon escalated into an officer-involved shooting, sending two people to hospital and prompting a provincial investigation.
St. Paul RCMP responded to a report of a 19-year-old woman who had been stabbed in the 4700 block of 51 Avenue around 1:30 p.m. on March 10, 2026.
Confrontation With Suspect
When officers arrived, they began communicating with a male suspect at the scene.
Police say a confrontation occurred during the interaction, and an officer discharged their service pistol, striking the suspect.
The injured man was transported to hospital by air ambulance, while the stabbing victim was taken to hospital by ground ambulance. Authorities say both individuals are expected to survive.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
Nearby Schools Put Into Hold and Secure
As a precaution, nearby schools were placed in hold and secure, which restricts entry and exit from buildings while allowing classes to continue inside.
RCMP say there were no direct threats to the schools or the public, and investigators believe the incident was isolated.
Provincial Investigation Launched
Because the suspect was seriously injured during the police interaction, the Chief Executive Officer of the Police Review Commission (PRC) has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate.
Under Alberta’s Police Act, a Level 1 investigation is launched when an incident involves serious injury, death, or serious allegations involving police actions.
At this stage, investigators say the information released is based on initial details available.
RCMP Conducting Internal Review
In addition to the ASIRT investigation, the RCMP has initiated its own internal review process. The review will examine:
- RCMP training and policy
- The police response to the situation
- The involved officer’s duty status
- RCMP say they are fully cooperating with ASIRT investigators.
