Bonnyville RCMP Urge Drivers to Buckle Up — Every Seat, Every Road

Police say simple choice can prevent deaths and lifelong trauma

Bonnyville RCMP are reminding drivers and passengers that wearing a seatbelt is not optional — it’s lifesaving.

In a March 1 media release, RCMP stressed that proper use of a vehicle’s safety restraint can significantly reduce the risk of death or serious injury in a collision.

Seatbelts Save Lives

Police say seatbelts must be worn by all occupants of a vehicle in Alberta. That includes short trips, backroads and even private property.

Staff Sgt. Lloyd Pinsent says officers regularly respond to serious crashes where lives could have been saved.

He says too often, fatalities or severe injuries could have been avoided if occupants had been wearing their seatbelts. Instead, families are left dealing with lifelong consequences, while first responders carry the trauma of those scenes.

What Drivers Need to Know

Bonnyville RCMP are reminding residents of the following:

  • Seatbelts must be worn by all vehicle occupants

  • The lap belt should fit snug across the hips

  • The shoulder strap should sit across the middle of the chest, not the neck or stomach

  • Seatbelts should never be twisted and must latch properly

  • Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under 16 are properly restrained

  • The fine for not wearing a seatbelt is $162

  • Seatbelts are recommended on off-road vehicles if equipped

Police also remind parents to ensure children are in the correct car seat or booster for their age, height and weight.

A Simple Step That Protects Families

RCMP say the message is straightforward — buckle up every time.

The detachment is urging everyone in Bonnyville and surrounding rural and remote areas to make seatbelt use a non-negotiable habit.
