Cold Lake Positioned for Major RCAF Investment Following High-Level Provincial Meeting
Cold Lake is preparing for what city officials are calling a once-in-a-generation investment into the Royal Canadian Air Force, following a high-level meeting with Alberta’s premier and senior provincial leaders.
According to the City of Cold Lake, the meeting was held last week with Premier Danielle Smith, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade Joseph Schow, Parliamentary Secretary, Military Liaison and Chief Whip MLA Justin Wright, and Bonnyville–Cold Lake–St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr.
“Cold Lake will be the epicenter of a once-in-a-generation investment into the Royal Canadian Air Force,” the City stated. “This spending will lead to significant growth in the community, creating a number of jobs across various sectors.”
The City says the economic impact will extend beyond Cold Lake, with employment opportunities expected across Alberta. Short-term construction jobs are anticipated first, followed by long-term, permanent positions in both the public and private sectors.
The meeting also included regional and industry partners, including representatives from the M.D. of Bonnyville, CAE, Sky Alyne, Canadian UAVS, and Portage College. Discussions focused on both the opportunities and challenges tied to the anticipated growth and how governments and local partners can work together to prepare.
“We were grateful for bringing our partners and friends… to discuss the scale of the investment, the resulting opportunities and challenges it will bring, and how both the City of Cold Lake and Province of Alberta can position itself to best respond,” the City said.
Key topics raised during the meeting included the need for scheduled passenger air service into Cold Lake, upcoming Highway 28 upgrades, potential rail benefits for the region, increased demand for skilled trades and training capacity, and the importance of developing a mix of housing options to support growth.
The City of Cold Lake expressed appreciation for the Government of Alberta’s engagement at what it described as a critical time for the region.
“The City of Cold Lake is thankful for its partners’ assistance and expertise, and grateful for the Government of Alberta’s attention and support at this crucial time.”
Lakeland Connect will continue to follow developments related to the RCAF investment and its potential impact on Cold Lake and the surrounding region.
