St. Paul Fire Department Honours Years of Service and Leadership at Annual Awards Night
Years of dedication, leadership under pressure, and service to the community were front and centre as the St. Paul Fire Department recognized its members during its Annual Awards Night on Friday, January 23.
The evening celebrated firefighters who have committed years of their lives to protecting Albertans, highlighting long service milestones and outstanding leadership within the department.
Alberta Emergency Services Medal Awarded
Two members of the St. Paul Fire Department were presented with the Alberta Emergency Services Medal (AESM), an honour recognizing emergency responders who have completed at least 12 years of service to Albertans.
“Recipients of the Alberta Emergency Services Medal must have completed at least 12 years of service to Albertans as an emergency responder,” the department noted. “Bars signifying 22, 32, and 40 years of service are also presented to emergency responders when they reach those milestones.”
The 12-year AESM recipients were:
-
Firefighter Andre St. Arnault
-
Lieutenant Stephen Buryn
“IN SERVICE of ALBERTANS,” the department shared in recognition of their commitment.
The awards were presented by Mayor Glenn Andersen of the Town of St. Paul.
Fire Services Exemplary Medal Presented
Lieutenant Daniel Green, who also serves as a Paramedic, received the Fire Services Exemplary Medal, a national honour recognizing Canadian fire service members with a minimum of 20 years of service, including at least 10 years in high-risk duties.
“Lt. Green continues to serve with exemplary service to the SPFD,” the department stated.
Firefighter of the Year Award

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the 2025 Firefighter of the Year Award, selected annually by members of the department to recognize an individual who best represents the values of the fire service and the community.
This year’s honour was awarded to Lieutenant Cody Bodnar.
“This award is chosen amongst the members of the department, and annually they select a member whom they feel represent the department and community in a positive way,” the department said.
Lt. Bodnar was recognized not only for his professionalism under pressure, but also for his leadership and mentorship.
“Lt. Bodnar always has a positive outlook, and keeps a level head when things get difficult,” the post continued. “Cody plays an instrumental part in teaching and mentoring new firefighters from around the region.”
The Firefighter of the Year award was also presented by Mayor Glenn Andersen.
A Night of Recognition and Gratitude
The Annual Awards Night served as a reminder of the dedication, sacrifice, and leadership within the St. Paul Fire Department, recognizing members who continue to serve the community with professionalism and pride.
Congratulations were extended to all award recipients for their continued service to St. Paul and the surrounding region.
