he skates are on, the lights are glowing, and winter fun is officially underway in the MD of Bonnyville.

A brand-new 400-metre skating loop at Vezeau Beach is now open, inviting residents to glide their way through the season. Skate during the day for a scenic outing, or come back in the evening for a truly magical experience under the lights. With picnic tables and fire pits scattered along the trail, it’s the kind of place where a thermos of hot chocolate, a few hotdogs, and extra time to linger just make sense.

Rinks and Trails Open Across the MD

The Vezeau Beach skating loop is the newest addition to the MD’s winter recreation lineup, opening on Dec. 19. Earlier in the month, the Ardmore Ice Rink and Muriel Lake Cross-Country Ski Trails opened on Dec. 12, followed by the Cherry Grove and Fort Kent rinks.

Together, the facilities offer a mix of skating and skiing options spread across the region, making it easier for families and friends to enjoy winter close to home.

The MD is cleaning the ice in preparation for warm weather this week.

A Winter Experience Built for Community

The Vezeau Beach loop was created by flooding a portion of the campground road, resulting in a longer, flowing skating experience rather than a traditional rink. The entire loop is lit, making it welcoming for both daytime and evening use.

Fire pits and picnic tables have been moved to the edge of the trail, with free firewood available for public use, turning a simple skate into a full winter outing.

Maintained and Ready All Season

MD crews continue to maintain ice surfaces throughout the winter, clearing snow and resurfacing as conditions require. In addition to ice and ski facilities, more than 20 kilometres of paved walking trails remain open year-round for those looking to stay active without skates.

A Quick Safety Reminder

Winter conditions can change quickly. Residents are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear helmets on ice surfaces, check conditions before heading out, and follow posted signage. Skating or skiing with a buddy is also recommended.
