The Alberta government is investing million through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to accelerate the development of cleaner, more efficient drilling technologies.

The Drilling Technology Challenge, funded by Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program, aims to cut industrial emissions and modernise the province’s resource sector. The initiative builds on the Alberta Drilling Accelerator, launched in 2024, and supports Alberta’s ongoing transition toward sustainable energy production.

Projects will receive between $250,000 and $8 million to advance technologies such as precision drilling systems, AI-powered monitoring tools, low-impact rigs, and geothermal or carbon capture applications.

“Each new technology strengthens Alberta’s leadership in responsible and reliable energy,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

Justine Riemer, CEO of ERA, added the funding will keep Alberta “at the forefront of clean, efficient, and cost-effective drilling.”

Applications are open until January 29, 2026, with results shared publicly once projects are approved.
