MENZIES: This is posturing, don’t expect an election any sooner

My political philosophy is pretty simple – expect things to get just a little bit worse all the time.

I suppose I middle that expectation by being optimistically pessimistic. I expect the worst, and then if something positive happens, hey, big time bonus!

The news of federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh gesturing the ripping up of the agreement with the Liberals, putting this government in major instability, thundered as loud as it can without any Meta buzz.

The ramifications mean that the Liberals must get votes somewhere in order to pass legislation. It does present the opportunity for a confidence vote, which could trigger a snap election.

That’s what piqued interest on Wednesday morning. Could it be real? Could voters actually get the chance soon to vote out Trudeau, whose approval is sinking lower than Sydney Sweeney’s v-neck?

I’m not convinced we are any sooner to an election, but would be pleasantly surprised.

What is Singh’s motivation here?

Just because there isn’t a “formal” agreement, doesn’t mean NDP MPs, or even Bloc MPs, aren’t going to continue supporting the Liberal laws. It reeks to me of mere political lip service, which Singh has exuded in spades as his party’s leader.

While providing support for years, he spoke out of the other side of his mouth and slammed Trudeau here, criticized Trudeau there. But the vote yay was not deterred.

So, is this not the next logical posturing move?

He’s thinking: let’s untether ourselves from the sinking ship that is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s popularity, polling around 25% according to Leger in August, and try to claw at Liberal supporters to give the NDP some type of momentum before Fall 2025?

What’s the rush for the NDP?

Prepare for a full campaign when required, with a major lead for the Conservatives at the moment.

This is especially true because many Canadians are not fooled by this blatant act of doublespeak. Who actually believes that the NDP could form the government?

The excitement is nil. The buzz you hear are wasps, not positivity.

So, sure, we may head to the polls sooner than later, but don’t get your hopes up if you’re craving change tomorrow.

It’s only a week and a half until the House of Commons reconvenes. Expect some major theatre, lots of pomp, little action.
