SPORTSHOUND: Win some, lose some

Tales from the Timebox for February 6, 2024

Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. It’s weird how it works at every level of hockey.  The same team doesn’t show up every weekend.  The U13 Avalanche had a six game winning streak going. This past weekend they lost two games and tied one. Nothing weird about that, except that they had beaten the same three teams the weekend before. And as far as I can tell,  it was all the same lineup. Maybe our guys didn’t get mentally prepared? Who knows? Or maybe the other guys didn’t show up last week. Hey, let’s remember, they are just 11 and 12 year old kids.

The U13 Avalanche lost to Dewberry/ Marwayne on Friday night 5 to 2 in Dewberry. Team captain William ‘Billy Bob’ Ballas and veteran centerman ‘Jesse James’ Penner scored for the Avalanche. Rookie Delaney ‘Downtown’ Swedgen with an assist.

Then they lost to Irma 8 to 2 here at home on Saturday. Billy Bob with another goal and an assist. Hudson ‘the Bull’ Brousseau with a goal. Grinder  Brody ‘the Thrasher’ Trach and the rugged Jaxon ‘Magic’ Marcoux with helpers.

On Sunday, the U13s played an all-female team from Lloydminster, the game ended in a two-all tie. It seems like the Avalanche were snake-bit in this one and didn’t have any luck around the net, ringing it off posts and crossbars. But the Bull managed to hit the target and scored both of the Avalanche goals. Magic with two assists. Billy Bob and Hunter ‘Hardrock’ Pankiw with one assist each.

U18 Avalanche

The U18 Avalanche had a real donnybrook of a game going on Saturday against  Onion Lake here at home. The game ended in a five-all tie and a game sheet full of penalties. Birthday boy Gavin ‘Green Light’ Kadutski had a hat trick. Kade ‘Kamikaze Kid’ Fontaine had two goals. ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford had a couple of apples. Kaleb ‘Formula One’ Fontaine is on the game sheet with one assist. Goalie Alex ‘Mr. Plywood’ Patterson is facing 35 shots.

On Sunday the U18 Avalanche team defeated Irma/Mannville 7 to 4. Quinton ‘Rampage’ Quinney with a goal and two assists. Green Light lit it up with one goal and one assist. Sam ‘ Spiderman’ Rogal. Seth ‘ Motorman’ Morton, Top Gunner, ‘Saint Nick’ Penner, and the Kamikaze Kid all scored one goal each. Two helpers for Formula One. Everett Deschamps, ‘Hawk Eye’ Cardinal, and Evett ‘Snoop Dog’ Smereka all added an assist. Goaltender Mason Ehnes with 29 shots on goal with the win.

U15 Avalanche

The league leading undefeated U15 Avalanche just keeps rolling over teams. Their record now is 20 wins and 3 ties. This past weekend they walked all over Cold Lake on Thursday night and then did the same to Thorhild on Saturday. Both of these games they won by a landslide, or you could say they were buried 15 feet under by the Avalanche. This coming Thursday the U15 will host the Bonnyville Pontiacs. Hopefully, this will be a closer contest. Bad habits start to develop when teams have it too easy.
