Tales from the Timebox for November 7, 2023
U15 Avalanche
Nothing is better for a bit of drama than a penalty shot late in the game with only a minute and a half left to score the potential winner. Parents, coaches, and players have their fingers crossed, waiting to see who will win the battle: the shooter or the stopper.
U15 Avalanche on the road in the Border City Friday night were all tied up at three goals apiece when the officials called a penalty shot. Remington ‘Steel’ Reynolds sniped the winning goal on a penalty shot late in the game. Speedy Braylee ‘Free Willy’ Lesyk with two goals. Rylan Quinney adding one. ‘Without a Trace’ Morgan and ‘Boe Dog’ St. George with assists.
On Sunday at home, the team was trailing 5 to 3 and came back to tie five all against the Vermilion Tigers. Brendan ‘Buzz Saw’ Kadutski was buzzing with a hat trick. Free Willy and Alexander Naistus with one goal each. Super job on the blue line in this game by the rookie Jackson ‘J.R.’ Rawlake and the two towing D Men Jaxon ‘Smitty’ Smith and Anton Braithwaite.
U18 Avalanche
The U18 played at home on Sunday afternoon, defeating Lloydminster 5 to 1. This game was close until the middle of the third period—two to one for the Avalanche. Late in the third, the Avalanche would turn on the Jets and add three more. Seth ‘Motorman’ Morton, ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford, Gavin ‘Green Light’ Kadutski, ‘Saint Nick’ Penner, and Kaleb ‘Formula One’ Flamand sharing the scoring. ‘Kamikaze Kid’ Kade Fontaine with a couple of helpers. Sam ‘Spiderman’ Rogal, Hawke Cardinal, and ‘Cyclone Cole’ Pierce all with assists. Behind the mask, Alex ‘Mr. Plywood’ Patterson was solid in the cage.
U9 Avalanche
What a difference a couple of weeks can make. Head coach Devin Moneta, another of our former Elk Point Avalanche alumni, has done an excellent job with the U9 Avalanche team this year. Devin played high-level junior and senior hockey and gave back what he knew to the youth. The U9 team hosted Kitscoty on Saturday morning. U9s use half ice and change on the fly. Less than a month ago, in their first game, the team looked slightly slow when the buzzer would sound for line changes. But not this past Saturday. They came out of the gate like gangbusters. The Bruise Brothers, Cohen ‘Big Horn’ and Gavin ‘the Badger’ Brousseau were cruising. Big Horn has mastered the wrist shot going to the top shelf. He scored many goals, but he added just as many assists setting up most of the rest of the team, including his little apprentice brother Badger, with a handful of goals. ‘Awesome Lawson’ Moneta was on the doorstep numerous times and set up a few guys, too, including Jasper ‘Grizzly Bear’ Hymanyk with his first career goal on a one timer. Taber ‘Tiger’ Gadwa with a lovely upstairs shot, scoring one. Raiden ‘Radar’ Svadra has a strong shot and scored a couple. Landon ‘Lights Out’ St Arnault was doing an end rush, cutting a couple, too. Lights Out is helping out this goalie, too, with his speedy backchecking. ‘Bye Bye Birdi’ Bowman, Jacob ‘the Snake’ Slwyka, and Maximus ‘to the Max’ Laliberte all doing a terrific job of forechecking turning over the pucks. Tytus ‘Titan’ Gadwa, between the pipes, is coming up with some monster saves.
U13 Avalanche
The U13 played to a four-all tie on Friday night in Lloydminster against an all-female U13 team. ‘Fearless Frank’ Killiam with his first goal in his minor hockey career. Trust me, this won’t be his last; Fearless has the drive to score many more. ‘Jesse James’ Penner, William ‘Billy Bob’ Ballas, and Jaxon ‘Magic’ Marcoux with one goal each.
U11 Avalanche
It was tough sledding for U11s, who were sluggish Saturday morning and could not get their wheels moving against the Hughenden Jets. Stetson ‘Shack’ Reynolds and Jase ‘the Jackal’ with a couple of goals each. Aspyn ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ with a goal and an assist. ‘Benny Boy’ Saddleback in the net was bombarded with shots.
