Terry Fox Runs race money for cancer research this Sunday

The Terry Fox Run is taking place nationally on Sunday, with local runs to all over the Lakeland to raise money for cancer research. 

In Bonnyville, there are two runs happening along Jessie Lake Trail at 8:00am and 1:00pm. 

Coordinator Les Parsons says you don’t have to run though. You can walk, bike, or even scooter to raise money towards Fox’s long standing dream of the Marathon of Hope. 

“It just keeps trickling in that money. Last year we reached $120,000 just in Bonnyville, mostly thanks to Evelyn Campeau,” said Parsons, commenting on Campeau’s longtime role in organizing the event and the money its earned over the course of 39 years. 

“If 40 million Canadians gave a loonie, that’s $40 million bucks. It’s an annual thing and I’m excited about it like it’s the first time we’ve ever done it.” 

Schools have dates picked out as well so students can participate in the initiative. 

In April 1980, Terry Fox began his cross-country Marathon of Hope on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, making it as far as Thunder Bay before he was forced to stop upon hearing the news his cancer had returned. 

What’s grown since is a fall tradition where Canadians of all stripes run in his honour. 

All money raised goes towards the Terry Fox Foundation.

Across the Lakeland 

Cold Lake’s run will start at the Energy Centre that Sunday morning at 9:00am with the running to begin at 10:00am. It is slated as a 5km run.

St. Paul will see an audible as it pertains to the running path, which this year will be Ecole du Sommet and largely be ran along Lagasse Park. Registrations begin at 9:00am with the run starting at 10:00am.

In Lac La Biche, registration begins at noon at McArthur Place with the running kicking off at 1:00pm. There are 5K or 10K options for participants, with the route beginning at McArthur Place and finishes at Pleasant Acre Drive.

Even if you don’t participate, you can still support cancer research with a donation through the Terry Fox Foundation.
