Overnight brush fire in Vermilion caused by cigarette
There was an overnight brush fire in Vermilion caused by a errand cigarette.
Despite the -20 degree temperatures and snow on the ground, an errand cigarette butt started a brush fire east of the Town on Old Highway 16 sent Vermilion Fire & Rescue Society out the door at 12:47 a.m. this morning,” County Fire Chief Kirk Huges said.

Firefighters located the seat of the fire in towards the tree line and made a quick attack with the turret nozzle of the first on-scene engine.
The fire was quickly knocked out, and crews searched the area for any fire spread or hot spots.
“A reminder, cigarette butts go into approved containers – not out the window,” Huges said.
