Three Lakeland schools see positive COVID cases; more communities under enhanced measures

There has been one confirmed case of COVID-19 at three Lakeland area schools.

Lakeland Catholic said there is a confirmed case in École Dr. Bernard Brosseau Middle School and École Notre Dame Elementary School.

Lakeland Today has reported a case at St. Paul Elementary as well.

“The Division has worked collaboratively with Alberta Health Services during this time. All close contacts of these individuals are currently self-isolating at home as per Alberta Health Services and Lakeland Catholic protocols to ensure that we maintain the health and safety of our schools and communities,” said Amanda Wildman, communications for LCSD.

“The school facilities are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized with enhanced measures daily. At-home learning opportunities have been provided for all students involved. We look forward to welcoming the affected students and staff back to in-person learning when their isolation requirements are completed.”

Lakeland update

Vermilion River County and the M.D. of Wainwright will likely be under enhanced health measures with 10 active cases within each municipality as of Tuesday.

Two Hills County and the County of Minburn added new cases on Monday, which saw these areas fall under enhanced measures.

Both the St. Paul-Saddle Lake and Lac La Biche areas saw 11 new cases on Tuesday under the “local geographic area” on the AHS COVID data map.

There are 92 active cases and 201 recovered in the St. Paul-Saddle Lake area. The Saddle Lake News, Events, and Information page reported a batch of recoveries in their last update on Monday with now just 17 active cases and 171 recoveries.

In the Lac La Biche area, there are 58 active cases and 23 recoveries.

Five new cases were reported in the Cold Lake area and one new positive test in the Bonnyville area.

Active cases remain the same in the Cold Lake area with 62 active and 65 recovered–23 active and 67 recovered in the Bonnyville area.

Cold Lake First Nations has reported three active cases on-reserve and 18 recovered and there is nine active cases in Kehewin with 34 recoveries.

In the Smoky Lake area there is 24 active and 28 recovered. Meanwhile, the Frog Lake area has seven active and 12 recovered.

Provincial update

On Tuesday, chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported 1,307 new cases of the virus after under 16,000 tests.

The provincial positivity rate remains the same at 8.4 per cent.

There are 479 Albertans in hospital with 97 of those in intensive care.

Ten COVID-related deaths have reported to Alberta Health in the past 24 hours, the death toll is 551.
