Haying in the 30’s latest event cancelled this summer

Haying in the 30’s is the latest summer event that’s fallen victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 22nd edition of the annual fundraiser outside of Mallaig will not go-ahead August long weekend this year, said Martin Naundorf, president of the Haying in the 30’s Society, in a letter.

The hallmark event brings thousands to camp for the weekend free of charge, while raising money they use to donate to families dealing with cancer.

Naundorf said the society is still accepting support applications and will provide financial assistance to as many people as possible.

“We recognize that for those undergoing cancer treatments, the stress of the pandemic is adding to already difficult circumstances,” he said.

“In order to keep up our current level of support, we are exploring options that may allow us to take a different approach to our fundraising event this year and will provide information once those decisions have been made.”

The Haying in the 30’s Society donated $406,000 to families in the Lakeland, and provincewide,  dealing with the financial realities of cancer last year, including a record of $270,000 raised from their signature two-day event alone.

Naundorf went on to say that they’ll be ready for August long weekend in 2021.

“If you are in a position to help, we would be grateful for any donations through our website or by mail at Box 35, Mallaig, T0K 2K0.”
