The Bonnyville Soccer Association’s U15 boys and U19 girls have punched their ticket to Alberta Soccer Provincials this July with gold medal performances at Lakeland Cup over the weekend.

“It was fantastic games over in Cold Lake for the whole weekend, there was really, really good soccer,” said club president Jose Texiera.

The U15 boys coached by Jose Teixeira have only lost one game this season.

“They only lost one game because of the fact that their minds were in the game. Those kids nowadays they play those computer games that;s where the mind was probably so but overall they’re very good strong group of kids and really good players.”

After an opening draw to Cold Lake 1-1, Bonnyville defeated Lac La Biche 3-1 and then defeated Vermilion and St. Paul on Sunday to claim gold.

The U15 boys squad will practice for the next couple weeks until Provincials July 5-7 in Vermilion.

St. Paul finished with silver and Lac La Biche with bronze.

U19 girls headed to Rocky Mountain House

The U19 girls were previously described as a “mighty machine” by Texeira. The girls defeated Vegreville 1-0 and drew 4-4 against Vermilion to claim gold and move onto Provincials in Rocky Mountain House.

“It was a big win for them for sure and the girls are all excited to go and hopefully clinch gold at Provincials also,” said Teixeira.

That doesn’t mean the soccer season is over for other age groups. A team comprised of players throughout the Lakeland will be put together to make a Tier II competition team called Lakeland FC.

“We held already one set of trials and we’re going to be holding the next trial is going to be June 20 in St. Paul,” said Texiera.

“That’s going to be an opportunity for more advanced soccer within the Lakeland region.”

Lakeland Cup for U13 and U17 age groups is this weekend in Vegreville.
