Tales from the Doug-Out: June 5th, 2019

Kids don’t play baseball at recess or pick up scrub like we did. Many of them just don’t know the rules or have any skills. Minor ball in Elk Point is hoping to change that. Head coach Jackie Penz, her assistants Jacque DeMossiac and his wife Felina are doing a terrific job of teaching the Mosquitoes the basics.

Last Thursday at home they defeated Cold Lake, easily. ‘Kid Kade’ Fontaine did double duty behind the plate and pitching. Kale ‘the Hawk’ Ockerman and Kaysen ‘Dynamite’ DeMossiac were sharing the pitching duties holding the Cardinals to only one run all night. Madden ‘Mad Dog’ Flamand with two in the park home e first one over everyone’s head.

Rookies

Down in our Rookie division the Sox played against Bonnyville. Frank Killam crossing the plate after Bella Pinette hit a single, then Jaxon ‘Magic’ Marcoux drove her home. Nice play in the infield David ‘Crockett’ Cardinal fielding the ball and threw to William ‘Billy Bob’ Ballas on third fir the force play. Theo ‘Longhorn’ Loughran and Tenley Krankowski scoring on a 2 RBI doubles by Billy Bob. Then Hudson ‘Hammer’ Krankowski driving home Billy Bob.

In Peewee action the Sox are now 4 and O after defeating Elizabeth Colony 12 to 2 this past Thursday at home.

Out of town action

In out of town action grandson bantam age Phoenix Colbourne did well in his pitching debut this past Saturday in Cold Lake. He started the game going two innings, getting two strikeouts and allowing only 3 earned runs, his team leading the game by 2 runs when his pitch count was maxed out.

Two of our local girls Rylee ‘the Rocket’ Warawa and Kaylee ‘Big Bird’ Radcliff have been playing on the Bonnyville Angles competitive Peewee U-14 fastball team. They travelled to tournaments in Leduc two weeks ago winning the gold medal over Kitscoty in the final game. Then Edmonton this past weekend winning the gold medal again. This team is planing on entering provincials at the B or C level.
