In Elk Point
Shiny cars
Elk Point Auto Club is hosting its annual Car Show on Saturday, June 2, 9:00am to 4:00 pm. For the show, Main Street (50th Street) will be temporarily closed from Railway Ave to 50th Ave.
“It’s a good day and usually brings in lots of people,” noted Mayor Lorne Young at the May 7 Council meeting.
Pancakes for Seniors’ Week
June 3 – 9 has been proclaimed Seniors’ Week. Town councillors will be serving pancakes at the Seniors’ Recreation Centre from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 3.
Golf for STARS
Elk Point Emergency Services is holding its annual golf tournament on June 6th to raise money for STARS air ambulances. The Town of Elk Point is donating $500, while councillors and town representatives who choose to golf will pay their own entry fees. This allows the Town to support the event, while ensuring that residents’ taxes are not spent unnecessarily.
Pay up!
Residents who owe money to the Town of Elk Point no longer have six months to pay before being considered delinquent. Accounts overdue after 90 days will be pursued by a collection agency.
Tax notices
Property tax notices are expected to be issued on May 18.
Where’s the public engagement? One more councillor needed!
“It’s somewhat ironic that we didn’t get any public engagement on a policy that promotes public engagement!” exclaimed Mayor Young, regarding notices and advertisements requesting feedback on a policy encouraging residents to be involved in municipal decision making.
If you are interested in knowing what’s going on, Town Council’s meeting minutes are recorded live to provide a play-by-play of decisions made. As well, advertisements are regularly placed in the local newspaper, on the Town’s website, and on Lakeland Connect concerning changes to budget, finances, and certain policies. Polls, workshops, advisory committees, open houses, and face-to-face meetings provide other opportunities to make your voice heard.
Of course, the ultimate way to be engaged is to run for council. There is currently one seat open. Tuesday, May 15 is nomination day, and Tuesday, June 12 is Election Day. Check this link: 2018 Municipal By-Election – 1 Councillor Position or inquire at the town office to see how YOU can get involved.
Emergency Preparedness Week
May 6 – 12 is Emergency Preparedness Week. You should have received a text on Wednesday, testing the system.
