Tales from the Timebox: February 13th, 2018

Today’s story is dedicated to the memory of my dearest friend Peggy Maas, who passed away this past weekend at 94 years old. She was the kindest person I’ve ever know. Her coffee was always on, and the door to her house and her heart was always open; 24/7, 365 days of the year!

Peggy Maas Best Friend | Avalanche Fan

This is a craziest  time of year for minor hockey, but also the most exciting time of the year. The provincial round robins have started and three out of our four teams are still in the running. Since they are hosting,  the bantam team are already in and will not play until the final round. They will compete  for the zone title or zone rep in a few weeks from now. But our Peewee Tier # 1 team are still in the mix and played the second game of the two game series and hopefully won against Vegreville last night. The Midgets will be playing in their second round against Smoky Lake tonightTuesday at 7.30 right here at the AGR.
Last nights results were not available  at press time, but last Tuesday night the Peewee tier one team played in Vegreville winning the first game of the two game series 5 to 3. ‘King Kong Konnor’ Poitras leading the charge with four goals. The small but aggressive  Ryan ‘Ram Rod’ Cameron with one. Three assists for talented ‘Mick Jager’ Fontaine. Center  Vaughn ‘The Vulture’ Ockerman swooping in with a helper two. The rubber band man, goalie Vanden ‘ Super Mario’ Moroziuk played a strong game between the pipes.
On Sunday, the Peewee Tier 1 hosted Wainwright in league play the game ending in a five all tie. This was the first point of the year for this young team playing in the Tier # 1 league. Doesn’t sound like much, but believe me it was a big deal. The last time these two teams played the Avalanche lost 9 to 0 to the Bisons,  so you can see the obvious improvement in our team. A hat trick for ‘Mick Jager’. Two goals for ‘King Kong Konnor’ . Grinding away in the corners Cash ‘Paycheque’ Capjack and Landon ‘the Magnificient ‘ Malchowski with the assists. 37 shots on net in this one for ‘Super Mario’ who was scrambling around from side to side to shut the door. This team has come a long way from their first game in late October. Last week was a close loss to Bonnyville. This week a tie with Wainwright. So it just goes to prove that with patience and good coaching and a whole lot of determination they may just win a league game yet this year.
Our Peewee # 4 team has really stepped up their play lately too. This past Saturday they hosted the Vermilion Tigers winning 5 to 0. Two goals for the big sniper , Brady ‘the Bionic Man’ Hymanyk. Seth ‘Motor Man’ Morton, ‘Bo Diddley’ Fontaine and Kaleb ‘Formula One’ Flamand all adding to the total with singles. Two assists for ‘ Bazooka Joe’ Cardinal. ‘Wild Wyatt’ Pavoll, ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford and Madden ‘ Mad Dog’ Flamand also getting their noses dirty digging the puck out and helping out with assists.
Our Atoms played a really strong game here too  on Saturday at home against Bonnyville.  Down by a score of 4 to 1 after the first period, they rallied back in the second period to tie the game at 4 all. Heading into the third period they played their hearts out but couldn’t quite hold back the Pontiac’s offense  that kept coming in waves.   The final score 6 to 4 for Bonnyville.   Two goals for Evett ‘ Snoopy’ Smereka. The Eveready Bunny, hard working two way player Braylee ‘ Little Willy’ Lesyk with a goal and an assist. And ‘ Hurricane Kayl’ Warawa who seems to have gained huge confidence these last two games with a goal and an assist. . Two assists for the travelling D-man  ‘Cyclone Cole’ Pierce.  Goalie ‘ Good Time Charlie’ Lesyk who faced 39 shots, not only did a terrific job of keeping the puck out,  but he assisted on the fourth Avalanche goal with a pass up the ice. ‘ Good Time Charlie’ likes to play the puck and is always looking to shoot it into the corner or to one of his D Men.
On Sunday the Atoms travelled to Wainwright the game ending in a six all tie. Who let the dogs out ? Four goals for ‘ Snoopy’ who must have been  on the trail of a hot scent and tracked it right into the mesh. ‘ Little Willy’ who gives 110 percent every game with one.  Defenseman  ‘Cyclone Cole’ getting the green light with a goal and two assists. .  Two assists each for solid D Woman Anna ‘ the Banana’ Henderson. Speedy center-man  Kaysen ‘ Dynamite’ DeMosssic  and the smooth skating Charlotte ‘ Web Mail’ Henderson with one assist each.
Saturday morning the little Micro-novice team doubled up St. Paul 8 to 4. Two goals and three assists  for William ‘ Billy Bob’ Ballas, Two goals and an assist for Ryder ‘ the Rhino’ Malo Two goals and two assists  ‘Jesse James’ Penner . A single for Theo ‘ Long Horn’ Loughran. and Jaxson ‘ Magic’ Marcoux with a goal and an assist.
Our Novice Avalanche team won over Frog Lake 12 to 5 on Saturday at home. Hat tricks for Kale ‘ the Hawk ‘ Ockerman, ‘ Wyatt Earp’ Fontaine, and Riley ‘ Coyote’ Bourne. Brendan ‘ Buzz Saw’ Kadutski and Miles’ the Millionaire ‘ Koren with a goal and an assist each. Run and gun, Remington ‘ Steel’ Reynolds also buried  one bulls eye into the target. Fore checking and stealing the puck, Jackson ‘ J.R. ‘ Rawlake with a helper too. Behind the mask this week, ‘ Without a Trace’ Morgan wasn’t that busy but did an  awesome job of stopping the rubber when called upon.
It’s always a good idea to have a good meal a few hours before an important game. I always found that pasta worked great for energy. I wonder if that’s what his mom, Jean Ockerman fed her son the ‘ Batman ‘ Evan Friday night?  Why? Well he was really flying out there and scored the first four goals for the Bantam Avalanche, all in the first period. A natural hat trick plus one to boot! ‘ Lightning Liam’ Ludlage must have had some too, he scored a goal and added four assists. Matthew ‘ Quick Draw ‘ Quinney and Jaden ‘ Jet Stream’ Van Maarion with a goal and an assist each. ‘ King Cole’ Bendixen with an assist, the Avalanche winning a close one, on the road up in Lac La Biche 7 to 6.
Ten four good buddy! On Saturday the Bantam Boys played at home winning over Lloydminster with a big 10 to 4 score. This game was getting a little chippy before it was over,  which is normally the case at this level when one team gets a big lead on another team. ‘ Lightning Liam’ and ‘Danny Boy’ Cardinal with two goals each, ‘ King Cole’ , ‘Batman’ , ‘Quick Draw’ , ‘Jetstream’ , and Dallas ‘ Cowboy’ Bristow all with one goal each. Setting them up from the back end, defenseman Charlie ‘ Chuckles’ Rogal with three assists.
On Sunday the boys travelled up to Cold Lake the game ending in a six all tie. ‘ Lightning Liam’ lighting the lamp four times, ‘ King Cole’ and ‘Danny Boy getting one each. ‘ Jetstream ‘ with a couple of helpers. Three games and five points is pretty good, but it wouldn’t happen without the solid goaltending from ‘ Sexy Slader’ Hardcastle who has been silently prying his trade and improving all season long .
A really good weekend for the Midget Avalanche who played and won two games in league play and will be playing in a provincial game here tonightOn Saturday the boys travelled to the Border City winning quite easily 10 to 2 over the Blazers who were short quite a few players in this game for some reason. Two goals each for team captain ‘ Awesome Alex’ Hunter, Austin ‘ Astro ‘ Axley, and the six foot four Brody ‘ the Big O’ Odgaard. Singles for Hayden ‘ Hot Wheels’ Ludlage, Nick’ Sparky ‘ Anderson, Chase ‘ Rink Rat’ Dorey, and ‘ Warrior Warren’ Ference. Three assists for Abe’ New Guy’ Newfield. Wolke ‘ Wolfman’ Cueva and Cyle ‘ Grinder’ Graus each with an assist.
On Sunday the boys played a ‘ Lights Out’ in a game up in Lac La Biche. Some major problems with the power , the game was delayed four times and a few hours because of power outages and was finally called after two periods. The Avalanche winning at that point 9 to 4 , the Clippers waving the white flag and surrendered the two points. The ‘ Big O ‘ with four goals , ‘Awesome Alex’ with two, ‘Sparky’ , ‘New Guy’ and ‘Wolf Man; with one each. ‘ Hot Wheels with four assists.
