Now, talking about talent. This hockey team is loaded with talent. I’m talking about our little Atom Avalanche team who a heading to the provincial finals this coming weekend. This will be the first time in about fifteen years that we have sent an Atom team to the big show. Not an easy job to make the finals in Atoms.

There’s way more Atom teams across the province then any other level and a few of those players are so good that they will one day likely play in the NHL. At the Atoms level there is no AA or AAA. All the top players are still playing at home. Once  you move up to peewee and bantam some players are moving out of town to play in the bigger centers that offer AA and AAA; but at the Atom level all of the top prospects still play with their friends at their own home town rink.

Not only did this team win the Zone 2 provincial banner a few weeks ago, but this past week they won the North East Alberta Tier 1 B league banner. Winning the best two out of three games over Vermilion. A terrific job by their leader, head coach James Capjack who taught them about playing their positions, skating and shooting skills; and most of all… about teamwork. Let’s not forget his other team, his assistant coaches, Conrad Pierce, Shane Fontaine and manager Melisa Rogal who all helped along the way to hone this bunch of boys into a fine tuned machine. We are extremely proud of you guys and wish you all the best in Delbourne.  Have fun, live for the moment… but better yet, bring us back some shinny gold hardware!

Our midget team, who are hosting the provincial finals in just two weeks, played their zone finals this past weekend. Winning over Smokey Lake here last Thursday 5 to 4 and then traveled to Smokey Lake on Sunday for the second game of the two game total point series winning that one 3 to 1 to win the Zone 2 banner. So, not only are they hosting the Midget D Provincial Finals, but they are legitimate contenders. And that’s not all, the midgets are playing in the final series of the North East League  Tier 2 banner against Kitscoty. The first game of the best two out of three right here Tuesday March the 14th, the second game in Kitscoty on Thursday the 16th and then back here Sunday the 19th   at 1pm (if necessary).
