The Perfect Storm

Tales from the Timebox: February 21st, 2017

It’s often been said there’s a calm before the Storm, and I think that can be said about these girls. Earlier in the season was the calm, lately the Storm has been building. These girls never lie awake at night worrying about winning or losing. Just trying to do their best week after week; and lately that’s exactly what they have done.
The  bantam girls Storm have really picked up momentum, getting stronger and stronger every game this last month since the new year.  They  rolled into Vermilion on Valentines day and other than a five minute span in the second period they outplayed the Tigers for the most part of the game; especially in the third period.
Sydnee ‘ the Kid ‘ Crawford opened the scoring with the first goal of the game in the first period assisted by Georgia ‘ Gorgeous ‘ Bendixen . The Storm holding the lead for only a short time before the Tigers would tie it on a wicked slap shot from the point that was deflected in front,  Storm goalie Heaven ‘ Brick House ‘ Colbourne had no chance on that one. Then in the second period the Tigers would come on strong for a five minutes when the Storm tried to catch their breath adding three quick  ones, making it 4 to 1 after forty minutes. But after some Valentine donuts from Doug’s Donuts Shop during the intermission, the Storm came out stronger than ever and would not weaken or roll over.  Jenna ‘ Precious ‘ Poitras with a nice pass from Laramie ‘ Louis’ Parr, picking up the puck at the red line, no one even close to catching her, scoring on a wide open break-away. The Storm not allowing a goal in third period , the final 4 to 2 for the Tigers. After the game coach Art Parr treating all the girls, and parents to ice cream for Valentines Day!
On a stormy Sunday outside the AGR at home the Storm were inside  creating some real excitement. The momentum from Tuesday game still with the girls and the determination to win the last regular season game of the year was with them too. No score after the first period even though the Storm were outshot 16 to 1, the ‘Brick House’ kept them in the game. The second period was much better the Storm getting 10 shots on net, and though they were down 1 to 0 at  the end of the second period they played extremely well. Third period was all the Storm, they  came out all fired up. Less than three minutes into the third,  Jadey ‘the Lady’ Capjack would send a wrister top shelf into the mesh, assisted by Jelena ‘Prime Time’ Parr. Then less than a minute later, Jenna ‘Precious’ Poitras would score assisted by Ashley ‘Hacksaw’ Hunter and ‘Gorgeous’ Bendixen.
‘Precious ‘ has been on a tear lately, scoring a goal in every one of her in the last three games. The Storm would hold the lead for what seemed like an eternity  every shot on net getting big oh’s and ahhhs from the crowd. Now  down to the final minute, the Storm still leading 2 to 1 getting assessed one penalty, right after another, two women short, the face off in their end. The Blazers would pull the goalie, making it six on three, the Blazers crowding the crease, scoring with 20 second left on the clock to tie the game. The girls still thrilled to come out of this one with a tie, the closest they have come all year to winning a game. Sometime this weekend the Storm will be playing the Irma Aces for the first round of playoffs in a two game total point series.
The Atom Avalanche captured the league top spot this past weekend after defeating Vermilion Tigers on Fridaynight. The last time these two team met the Tigers would win, but head coach James Capjack had his boys prepared for the eye of the Tiger this time and had no problem winning this one.  Now sitting on top spot in the league, getting ready for the playoffs, and going to the big show in Delburne in a month…life doesn’t get any better!
Not so lucky for bantam Avalanche, who also played in Vermilion Friday night losing 4 to 2 . ‘Lightning Liam’ Ludlage scoring assisted by Dallas ‘ Cowboy’ Bristow and ‘King Cole’ Bendixen, assisted by ‘Silent Sam’ Henderson and Wolke ‘Wolfman’ Cueva.  Friday nights loss making it a must win on Saturday night to make the playoff, when the bantams hosted Provost and just missed out tying the game 4 all. The bantams needed a win to get in. Provost the team closest to the Avalanche in points only need to tie get into the finals. ‘Silent Sam’ and Charlie ‘Angel’ Rogal with two goals each, a couple of assist for ‘Lightning’ , Jace the ‘Stafford Streak’, ‘Hank the Tank’ Rogal and the ‘Wolfman’ with the other helpers. No sense dwelling on spilt milk… there’s still the provincial to be had. This coming weekend the bantams will face off against Boyle on Saturday night here at home for the final round of provincial round robin, the winner of the two game total point series will be going the big show in Hanna. The second game of the two game total point series if necessary will be played in Boyle on Sunday. Lets do this!!
The novice 1A team played Bonnyville on Saturday. It was a neck-to-neck-game for the first two periods, with the Avalanche running out of steam in the third. Some shinning stars from the game, Madden ‘Mad Dog’ Flamand with a hat trick, ‘Stellar Ella’ Ballas with two goals, and ‘Without a Trace’ Morgan with a single. Assists by ‘Notorious Nolan’ Ballas. All the points just weren’t enough to take the game, Bonnyville recorded the two points with a 8-6 final score.
Our league leading and provincial host midget team continue their winning ways, taking a 9 to 2 win over Mallaig on this past Sunday.  A hat trick plus a helper for the scary monster who just keeps growing, ‘Big O’ Brody Odgaard.  Nick ‘Sparky’ Anderson lighting it up for two goals and an assist, ‘Captain Obvious’ Austin Stafford, Hayden ‘Hot Wheels’ Ludlage and Bowen ‘Bam Bam’ Krider with one each. D Men ‘Warrior Warren’ Ference and ‘Angus ‘Micky’ McFarlane with one assist each.
And we don’t want to forget Kyle ‘Ketchup Kjenner, he was  really laying on the sauce in this one, plastering them with one goal and four assists. The midgets are almost done league play, they will have one more league game next weekend against Mannville and then playoffs;  plus are now waiting for the winner of the Smoky Lake vs. Mallaig series, they will play the winner of that series to see who wins the Zone #2 banner. Either way the Avalanche are in provincials as the host , but it would be really nice to capture the zone banner and have the bragging right. Then we all know we deserve to be there!
And now for the K. A Campbell quote of the week. “Either you give it right back or the next thing you know , everybody and his brother will be trying you on for size.” – Doug Harvey, All Star defenseman
