Elk Point Elks defeat Vermilion Rock 7-1

The Elk Point Sr Elks brought home two points from their road trip Friday to Vermilion. The Elks now sit second in the west division with two points behind the Wainwright Rustlers with their 7-1 win over the Rock. Coach Murray Cochrane says he was proud of the diversity the team displayed.

The first period went scoreless, then things really lit up for the Elks. “We had seven goals from seven different players,” having goal scorers is important to any team, but having seven able to light it up really shows the strength of the Elks. The team also welcomed back two veteran players, Lee Letestu and Devin Moneta. Both young dads, Coach Cochrane says the guys were very strong on their feet, “they both played very well, no daddy legs!”

Letestu, got his first point of the season early in the second period with an assist on the opening goal from MYLES WHITFORD at 7:21. That was followed up with Moneta getting the assist on MARK BRODBIN‘s goal at 13:26. DYSON KARBASHEWSKI rounded out the first period with the third goal for the Elks, LEE LETESTU picked up the assist on that goal, as well.

The final period started with a beauty from NICOLAS TRUFAL,  JORDYN WOZNIAK and JARVIS NICODEMUS added points to their stats with the assists. DAVIN BUCK followed with a goal less than a minute later; assist to WHITFORD and ZACH ZAROWNYMYLES QUINNEY made it a 6-0 game thanks to BOTTING and JASON KALYNCHUK, before the Rock were able to respond. STEPHEN SIMMONS got in the sole goal for Vermilion with just over two minutes left to play. The cellie was short lived, 20 seconds later MONETA reponded with the help of BOTTING, and closed the game 7-1 in favour of the Elks.

Mark Brobin was chosen Player of the Game by his team mates following the match, says Coach Cochrane.

Heading into the weekend with a rivalry match up between the Dewberry Mustangs and the Elks, Coach Cochrane says the club will be focusing on, “defensive end coverage and power play.”

The Elks welcome the Mustangs Friday night and St. Walburg will be in town on Saturday, both games at 8:30 pm.
