Recycling Program Proposed for Elk Point

Elk Point Town Council received a package from a resident requesting a recycling program be implemented in the Town. The resident included research with his request to show an idea of what it may cost the Town, along with ideas on how to begin the recycling process. Councillor Lorne Young explains this is the first of more talks to come in regards to recycling.

The resident did his homework, explains Young, “he checked with Bonnyville and Cold Lake, they’re doing recycling of plastics and glass.” The resident contacted the same provider the neighbouring communities are using, “they’ll provide the bins in our community, for a certain amount per month. Then there’s an additional fee for them to come and pick up the recycling, haul it and take it back.”

It gave Council a good starting point, says Young, “we want to research it more, it’s not that it’s not a good idea, it’s just – do we have enough money to do it? We’d love to be able to do it, to be able to add a service for our community.”

Council decided to look further into the cost, says Young, “we tabled it to our budget meetings, because there would be a significant cost involved in it.”  The budget meetings will be held in November.
