Behind it, the lot stretches wide and free of charge, with block-heater plug-ins that matter in an Alberta January. Inside the first set of doors, the Lobby Coffee Bar pours Starbucks beside a fireplace, and the carpet pattern, the artwork and the wall text all point at the same thing: this is Enoch Cree Nation land.

Past the lobby the building splits in two directions. One way leads to the main floor, smoke-free, 1,665 slot machines and 46 table games spread under a low hum of attract screens. The other leads to Embers, the smoke-friendly room, with 405 machines and 14 tables of its own. The Poker Room sits apart, 14 tables of cash games, wait lists handled through the free Poker Atlas app.

Who built River Cree and when it opened

The owner is River Cree Enterprises Limited Partnership, the business arm of the Enoch Cree Nation. The casino operating contract has been held by Sonco Gaming, a Canadian operator, and the hotel was run under Marriott when the doors first opened. The build cost $178 million, and when it opened it was the first Aboriginal-owned casino in Alberta.

Las Vegas-based Paragon Gaming held a minority interest in the early years. That ended in 2014, when a cross-border private placement funded the purchase of the minority stake and left the property fully in Enoch hands. The same period brought the first big physical change to the floor plan.

1) October 26, 2006 – the $178 million resort opens just west of Edmonton, the province’s first Aboriginal-owned casino.

2) 2014 – proceeds from a private placement fund the buyout of Paragon Gaming’s minority interest; sole ownership moves to the Enoch Cree Nation.

3) 2014 – a 25,000 square-foot expansion creates Embers: 14 gaming tables, 400 slot machines, two restaurants and a larger kitchen.

4) June 11, 2024 – Indigenous Services Canada issues a Notice of Determination for the Embers addition, finding no likely significant adverse environmental effects.

5) September 2024 – groundbreaking on a $200-million expansion: an 18-storey tower with 230 rooms and more than 30 luxury suites, a pool with two waterslides, and over 40,000 square feet of event space.

6) October 2024 – a further Embers addition of roughly 22,500 square feet is announced.

One footnote for anyone searching the name: the resort’s own app states plainly that it works “all without gambling on the app,” while a cluster of unaffiliated sites trades on the brand, which is what an independent review of River Cree activity exists to sort out.

Where it is and how to get there

The address sits on the Enoch Cree Nation reserve on Edmonton’s western edge, postal code T7X 3Y3. From downtown Edmonton the drive is about 12 miles and roughly 22 minutes. From Edmonton International Airport, estimates range between 20 and 30 minutes depending on route and traffic.

West Edmonton Mall is the closest landmark, a few minutes away by car, with a complimentary resort shuttle running to it every 30 minutes. Transit works but takes patience: the nearest stop, Granville Drive and Greenough Bay, is a 14-minute walk from the property, and the direct bus to West Edmonton Mall Bay A leaves every 20 minutes and takes about 29 minutes. Getting to the airport without a car means transfers and 1 hour 34 minutes at best.

Hours, age limits and house rules

The casino floor and the slot operation run 24 hours daily. Table games open at 11:00 am and close at 3:00 am. The Poker Room follows the same 11:00 am to 3:00 am window Monday through Wednesday, then runs 24 hours Thursday through Sunday.

Entry to the gaming floor is 18 and over. The Venue is an 18-plus room as well, with no minors admitted to shows. The Ticketmaster box office is at the Players Club desk, open seven days a week from 10:00 am to midnight, and it takes debit or credit cards only. Loyalty sits on the Players Club card: 100 points on sign-up, 2,000 points converting to $1 in River Cree Bucks, with a Cruiser’s Club track for players 50 and over.

Where to eat on site

The Kitchen Restaurant handles breakfast from 7:00 am on weekdays, lunch, and dinner until 10:00 pm, with a buffet service Friday and Saturday evenings. Tap 25 is the sports bar with the rink windows and the big screens. Fatburger grills Alberta Angus beef to order. Italia covers Italian, while Cree Subs and Cha Express handle sandwiches, hotdogs, taco bowls and quick service for anyone heading back to a table.

As of July 2024, Italia, Cha Express, Fatburger and Tap 25 are open to all ages, with minors accompanied by an adult. The gaming floors remain adults-only regardless of which door the meal is behind.

Is it worth the trip

The hotel holds 249 non-smoking rooms and suites, 11 of them suites, with floor-to-ceiling windows, microwaves, fridges and flat-screens that cast from Netflix. Wi-Fi, self-parking and the mall shuttle are included; breakfast is not. Rate tracking over a 12-month window put the cheapest month at an average of C$217 a night in October and the dearest at C$335 in February, with Wednesdays averaging C$207 against C$429 on Fridays.

The Venue carries 24,000 square feet of event space for up to 2,400 people, and the resort counts roughly 58,000 square feet of meeting and function space across 21 rooms. Add a pool, a hot tub, a 24-hour fitness centre and two sheets of ice, and the case for staying overnight rather than driving back into the city makes itself.

Gaming areas and The Venue are restricted to guests 18 and over; set a limit before playing and seek support if gambling stops being entertainment.
