Residents across the Lakeland region are being urged to stay weather aware after Environment Canada issued an ORANGE level Tornado Watch Saturday evening.

The watch means conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes. Environment Canada says storms developing this evening could also bring damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall. Significant damage to homes, infrastructure and the natural environment is possible if tornadoes develop.

A tornado watch does not mean a tornado has been spotted. Instead, it means the atmosphere is favourable for tornado development and residents should be prepared to act quickly if a warning is issued.

Environment Canada advises anyone in an area under a tornado warning, or who sees threatening weather approaching, to take shelter immediately in a sturdy building. The safest place is on the lowest floor in a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet away from windows. People in mobile homes, tents, trailers or vehicles should move to a permanent building if it is safe to do so. If no shelter is available, lie in a low-lying area and protect your head from flying debris.

Boaters are also urged to head for shore immediately if threatening weather approaches, as severe thunderstorms can develop rapidly.

Lakeland Connect will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
