COLD LAKE – Patients recovering from strokes, neurological injuries, fractures and other health challenges now have access to more specialized rehabilitation equipment close to home following a more than $ 6,500 donation from Hearts for Healthcare.

The new equipment is supporting allied health services at the Cold Lake Healthcare Centre, helping patients with everything from safe transfers and mobility to balance, coordination and reaction time.

The donation includes a bariatric wheelchair and cushion, bariatric transfer board, four GivMohr shoulder slings and BlazePod training equipment.

“We are incredibly grateful for this equipment and the positive impact it will have on our ability to provide patient care in Cold Lake,” said Adele Richardson, Rural Lead, Edmonton Rural Corridor-Northeast.

Supporting safer mobility and independence

The new bariatric wheelchair and transfer board are designed for patients requiring equipment with a higher weight capacity.

The wheelchair can support patients through rehabilitation and daily activities and can also be used temporarily by someone waiting to receive their own equipment.

The transfer board helps healthcare providers safely assist patients moving in and out of bed.

The Cold Lake Healthcare Centre now has two bariatric wheelchairs and two bariatric transfer boards in use.

For patients recovering from a stroke, the four new GivMohr shoulder slings are designed to reduce pain, improve mobility and provide support while patients participate in therapeutic activities.

Adding some tech to rehabilitation

The donation also brings BlazePod training equipment to the healthcare centre.

The light-based training system can be incorporated into rehabilitation exercises designed to improve balance, hand-eye coordination and reaction time.

It will be used with stroke patients as well as adult and pediatric outpatients recovering from neurological injuries and fractures.

“This much-needed specialized equipment will enhance allied health services, support the health of communities throughout the region, and contribute to safer, more comfortable and effective patient care,” said Kari Leiper, Executive Director of Hearts for Healthcare.

Hearts for Healthcare contributed more than $6,500 toward the equipment.

The donation is another local investment by the organization aimed at expanding the equipment and services available to patients receiving healthcare in Cold Lake.
