The Cold Lake Fighter Jets put together a strong all-around performance Saturday, defeating the Peace Country Cowboys 41-14 to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Following the game, head coach Teague Sherman said it was the type of performance coaches hope to see, with contributions from across the roster.
“It was a good game,” Sherman said. “Everybody got to play, everybody got reps, we all had fun and nobody got hurt with any serious injuries.”
Strong start sets the tone
Although rain threatened earlier in the day, the skies cleared before kickoff and the Fighter Jets wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.
Cold Lake opened the game with a touchdown drive before the defence delivered one of the game’s biggest momentum swings.
“Our defence stopped them right away in the end zone with a strip-sack and fumble recovery for a touchdown,” Sherman said. “From there, we were pretty much in control for the rest of the game.”
The early defensive score helped the Jets seize momentum and they never looked back.
Defence continues to shine
Sherman credited the team’s defensive unit for another outstanding performance.
Even in last week’s loss to the Calgary Gators, he noted the Fighter Jets held one of the league’s top offences without allowing an offensive touchdown.
“We try to keep it simple,” Sherman said. “We want our guys to react and just play football fast. We don’t want them thinking too much. We focus on a few key concepts and let them go out and make plays.”
He said allowing players to trust their instincts has helped the defence become one of the team’s strengths through the opening three games.
Road game next before returning home
The Fighter Jets return to action July 11 when they travel to face the Central Alberta Bucs.
They’ll then return home on July 18 to host the Calgary Wolfpack, giving local fans another chance to cheer on the Jets as they look to build on their strong start to the season.
With a 2-1 record, Cold Lake will aim to keep its momentum rolling as the season continues.
