A former Bonnyville elementary school teacher has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to child sex offences.
Janelle Arnold, who previously taught at Duclos School in Bonnyville, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual interference and eight counts of failing to comply with a release order.
On Monday, Arnold was sentenced to six years in prison for the offences.
A charge of making or publishing child sexual abuse material was withdrawn, along with two additional counts of failing to comply with a release order. Charges of sexual assault, sexual contact with a child and luring a child under 16 were stayed.
Arnold was arrested on three separate occasions in connection with allegations involving sex crimes against children.
Northern Lights Public Schools previously confirmed Arnold was a former teacher at Duclos School, which serves students from preschool through Grade 4 in Bonnyville.
A correction issued by the reporting outlet noted an earlier version of the story incorrectly stated Arnold had been sentenced to four years. The sentence imposed was six years.
The case has drawn significant attention across the Lakeland region due to Arnold’s former role as an elementary school teacher and the serious nature of the offences.
